Creed Shaving Soaps

I'd like your opinion. After Creed discontinued its shaving soaps, I was very fortunate to be able to pick up a pair of bowls & pucks in Green Irish Tweed. Some of you who are fanatical enough to spend $60 on a shaving soap might well agree that it is a superb performer.

Creed being Creed, they decided to resurrect the shaving soaps a while back. So I picked up a puck of Santal and another of Vetiver. My question then is: do you think the resurrected soaps are as good as earlier version?

The original Vetiver is by far a better scent but the performance is similar; slick and moisturizing but lacks cushion, still a great shaver. I just wish they did something with the damn bowl. So no as far as the Vetiver is concerned.

I never used any of the first-run soaps so I can't compare. What I can say is that I will not be buying any more of their soap. Just not worth what they're charging in my opinion.

I haven't had the pleasure of experiencing the earlier versions, but I do like the GIT soap SWMBO gave me last Christmas.

It's a hard soap and requires a little longer soaking prep time than C&S soaps or the old formulation of Pen's EF. Takes a little longer to load the brush than D.R. Harris soaps. Still, a fantastic scent and as Mark says "slick and moisturizing but lacks cushion".

I do like the current version, I just can't speak to it's being better or worse than earlier versions. Hard to justify the price, though.

And yes, for $65 I expect more than a *** pine bowl.

What do you think, Henry?

Ditto. I'm sure it will be years before I finish them off and my wife has taken over the GIT anyway. I've pretty much only have a few that I or ever replace and they're no where near the Creed prices.

How long ago did they discontinue them? I've not known much about Creed until recently. In London, most of the larger department stores now stock Creed, so they are pretty much everywhere (that I go).

I have the Vetiver (also posted the review on it here). The lather seems very thin to me, but the moisturising properties ("after-feeling") of the soap are superb. Also, the scent is heavenly. Those two factors justify the cost for me but the lather could be improved. Likewise the quality of the bowl.

I have no experience of the pre-discontinued soaps or the GIT for that matter and would also like to hear other people's views here.

I'm actually thinking of selling mine. So someone will be getting a deal on it. Don't get me wrong, it's a good soap. Not GREAT but good. But I can get much better lather and shaves from soaps that cost a fraction of what these cost.

I think it's Sullybob who has asked me in the past if I was interested in selling. Maybe a PM

I picked up my Vetiver a few years ago on vacation at a Creed boutique in Dubai that was the old version and was still discontinued. I think the scent was to resemble the version of vetiver that Creed had and now the new Vetiver resembles Creeds Original Vetiver. It was a nice scent but the new version seems a lot more solid and lasts a lot longer FWIR

Mark sums it up nicely - they smell good and provide good slickness but next to no cushioning. The original GIT soaps created a very nice lather.

If I recall correctly, the Santal and Vetiver soaps were discontinued long before I found out about them. GIT was still available later, perhaps a year ago?

Well I tried my new puck of Original Vetiver yesterday - see SOTD for Sunday 15th to see the pic I posted.

It was a good shave. I worked the lather a bit more than usual and it provided a much more meringue-like lather that was easily capable of a third pass as well. It didn't dry out and felt very good after rinsing it off at the end. I suffered no irritation.

Maybe I just wasn't patient with this soap in the past or indeed there is a difference with this soap's formulation? I do know not to judge a soap from it's only shave so I will be varying it into my rotation over the next month or so.
