Cream for a Younger Guy

I'd like to introduce my son (he's 25) to wet shaving---beginning with a good brush and cream, then on to a better razor.

One barrier is that he thinks my creams & stuff smell "old man-ish." This includes my Speik (too much lavender), Cremo Cream ("really, Dad---lemon?) and Proraso (too medicinal). Of course he really doesn't have any old-school barber shop experience---so I guess old school, while pleasant to me, is just "old" to him.

Can anyone recommend a cream or soap that's a bit more contemporary in scent and packaging? :001_cool:

Maybe some of you younger guys out there have some favorites.

-Joe

Well I am 30 and love the old smell I am in love with bay rum but the T&H Grafton might fit as a more contemporary smell I would defiantly use it more if it was cheaper.

and Proraso (too medicinal).

Proraso, too medicinal? I find the canned goo to be about as clinical as it gets. I'm about your son's age and my personal favorite so far is the TOBS Mr. Taylor scent. Of course, scent is one of the most YMMV things around.

I'm also 25, and my advice would be to take him to a brick and mortar store that carries some shaving products and let him see which type of scents he likes. I'm not sure what is available in Phoenix, but if you have a Sak's or Nordstrom's, he could at least check out the T&H or AOS lines. Another option would be to order a sample pack and try to get some of the TOBS or Trumper's scents.

Just to add another option to the good ones already suggested, you might consider one of the Crabtree & Evelyn shaving creams, Sienna, Nomad or Sandalwood. They seem a little more contemporary both in terms of scent and shopping venue.

About the same age as your son, and he may like The Body Shop's Maca Root Cream. Although, I do think Proraso (C.O. Bigelow actually) smells great. Another cream to look into is TOBS Avocado.

I'm 31 and I personally like the old school stuff...but I can see where your son is coming from...Mama Bears has a large selection of scents, maybe one of those can suit his tastes.

Does your son wear Cologne at all? If so, something along the lines of his favourite Cologne scent would probably be a winner. Otherwise, GFT-Coconut Oil, C+E Creams, TOBS Avocado (or almost any TOBS scent for that matter).....

You could have Al Raz make you a custom scent of 'The Bomb' shaving cream. Has pretty much every EO and maybe your son could just smell some EOs somewhere then you can place a custom order with Al and tailor make it to his scent liking.

Try the KMF range, they are pretty widely available and you can sniff before you buy. Key lime might be a good choice for him, but it seems that he might not like citrus fragrances. There is always the unscented too.

Nanny's Citrus Zinger, smells like lemonade or fresh lemon, the natural scent of course

TOBS Eton College, fresh cologne scent

AoS Sandalwood, sweet and warm woody scent

O Melhor, Fresh cosmetic scent

I don't know the products of Queen Charlotte but Mattew has a very good taste for the scents.

Im 25 and personally love the old time smelling stuff .. my brother tho whos younger hates it... he does like the sandalwood scent tho

TOBS avocado will do, if he doesn't like that then i'm not sure what else he would like.
I'm 23 and i tend to like the old school stuff better, so i have no clue what else he might like.
But the scent of the cream will disappear as soon as he puts his aftershave on, so i'm not sure why he's fussing about scent.

I rather use an awful smelling cream or soap that does a good job, then a great smelling one that leaves my skin unprotected.

I'm a year or so younger than the OP's kid , and I agree on the Mr. Taylor's. Also, I'm a big fan of Sandalwoods, especially Trumper's (it's ridiculously masculine). DR Harris Marlborough might be another possibility. Of course, YMMV, immensely.

I dunno about TOBS avocado...it smells awfully feminine for my nose.

+1 on O Melhor, it has a very good scent. If the "old-school" packaging is a bit too much, you can always try Nivea For Men. It's a modern, manly scent with contemporary packaging.
