Corpse Plant

These are cool. We have the Amorphophallus titanum at the institution where I work in California, and have had two blooms in recent years. At their peak they smell just rotten. It's great that the one at U. Wisconsin River Falls blooming right before Halloween--how topical.

I thought it was great too. I'm about 5 hours away, so I haven't smelled it. I wish I could though.

does it smell worse than corpse fruit DURIAN ???

I've never smelled either one. Is Durian really that bad?

Imagine a durian 7 feet tall, and 4 feet in diameter, and, well, you get the idea.....

In the wild they bloom once every 100 years or so; the scent needs to be powerful to attract an orgy of insect pollination. In the United States they have been crowd-pleasers (30,000 lined up at my institution in 2004) so they have been "artificially inseminated" (we actually have a botanist who does this) and bloom more often. I believe that you can buy them at about $500 a plant if you want to have the thing bloom in your yard. Maybe I'll get one and PIF it!
