cordless electric mowers

it's high time I got myself a real mower, rather than continue to rely on my push-reel mower, but I still want something environmentally friendly. does anyone have any recommendations on cordless electric mowers that do a relatively good job? I'm pretty ignorant about electric mower brands, so any pointers would be appreciated.

i'm apprehensive about using a corded mower because of cord length and inconvenience. I tried my friend's corded electric mower and it worked fine, but he has a smaller yard compared to ours and using extension cords seems like a hassle

I have a cordless Black and Decker mower. It works perfectly, mulches well, and is easy to use and charge. I have a very small lawn, and it only takes me about 15 minutes to mow, so I can't comment on battery life for a larger lawn. If you have a small lawn, I highly recommend the rechargeable mower. Check to see if you have a Black and Decker outlet near you -- I bought mine at the outlet for 40% off retail.

Since you want to be environmentally friendly, I recommend that you stay away from cordless mowers. There is a high environmental cost associated with the manufacturing of large rechargeable batteries. A corded electric mower is not as convenient as a cordless one but inconvenience is often the price that must be paid to be environmentally friendly.

darn it :001_unsur. it's like the lesser of two evils. i've read that gas mowers pollute more than cars and I'd like my carbon footprint to be as insignificant as possible.

Used to have one until my wife fried the battery.

Poor charging practices led to shortened battery life.

That being said, when it was new it had a good 75 minutes of run time. Cut very well.

If your lawn is any decent size I don't think an electric would be all that practical. The cordless ones would only develop problems with extended use, and on bigger lawns the cord will be a hassle. :scared:

If it's any consolation, the pollution that's being referred to is the more conventional CO and hydrocarbon emissions. The carbon footprint's related to the quantity of gasoline burned. A lawn mower doesn't burn a large quantity of gasoline. So I guess it's good news/bad news. Still a lot of conventional pollution; not much in the way of greenhouse gases.

I was also tempted by the one on Woot-but that thing looks awkward and heavy. I sure don't want to have to "touch up" the lawn with a weed eater after mowing-I'm lazy you know.

I think i'm gonna get this Ryobi 48v self-propelled cordless mower. it's gotten pretty decent reviews so I think it's a safe purchase

Ryobi makes a great product.

My Mom uses a corded that she has had for a few years; I'll see what brand it is when I'm over there today.

My Ryobi cordless electric arrived the other day and I finally gave her a go after work. all I can say is, wow. for an electric mower she can do a pretty thorough job. I only cut half my yard because my wife and I had a prior engagement, but it looks pretty awesome - i'm gonna finish the rest of it today. it's relatively quiet by lawn mower standards and easy to set up. the only drawback is it's like a tank. it's self-propelled which is an added bonus for me as it helps take the weight off when i'm doing the slopes in my yard. the battery takes roughly 10-12 hrs to charge and it can be lifted it out of the mower - this is useful since I don't know how batteries will react to extremely cold temperatures during the winter months when it's in storage.

overall, I love my new mower. it's low maintenance and easy to use. by far the best $430 i've spent
