What's new

Convince me I need a Simpsons two-band...

I'm seriously considering one of these, probably a Tulip. I exclusively use a Rooney 3/1 in Super, and love it, but...aside from really liking the LOOKS of the Simpson, are there any compelling arguements to pony up almost three times the price I paid for the Rooney?

When I got the Rooney, I was a "cream and bowl" kind of guy, but I've since gone almost exclusively to soaps and face lathering. I used to find the Rooney very stiff and scrubby and dense (compared to a Vulfix 2233 I was using before it), but I'm thinking I want something even moreso. I'm finding that the brush splays quite a bit when I'm scrubbing and lathering. Not horribly so though, and it doesn't stay all pushed out, but I want something that holds its shape extremely well yet still feels nice (as in luxurious and soft at the tips).

I really like the size of the Rooney 3/1 as well...22mm knot, 55mm loft, 50mm handle, but can't decide wien it comes to the Simpsons. Would I want a smaller or medium size one? I can't find definitive info on them, so if anyone can point me in that direction, I'd appreciate it.

One last thing...can anyone compare the Rooney's Finest to the Simpsons two band in terms of stiffness/softness/etc.? Thanks!

(Some of the) Simpsons two band super is identical to Rooney finest. So for the rest it's a matter of taste what handle you'd prefer...

Identical, as in hair grade, or that the knots are identical as well (density, loft, etc.)?

In hair grade in the first place...as for the loft density i can only compare my Vulfix Simpsons two band to my Rooney finest style 1 large, 2, 3 large and the Simpsons are more densely filled. But i can't compare to the more recent Stubby with a finest loft f.i.

Simpsons Tulip :em2200:

Sorry I don't own a Rooney's Finest badger brush.
Here is a picture with a Rooney's in Super (3 band) and a Simpson in super (2 band).
The Simpsons has unbelievable soft & white hairtips.:w00t:
Whiter than some Plisson brushes in WMH I own !

Most of the time I use Soap.
I love this Simpsons ! Emperor 2. I call it my face lathering brush

which do you find stiffer? Overall The Rooney.

The Hairtips of the Emperor are stiff near the handle and soft on top.

J.J., I will convince you otherwise. I have both and I like the Rooney better. It is more dense and works better with all soaps. I love my Tulip but the Rooney outperforms it. I think a better comparison would be the Chubby. It is equally dense.

Hmmm...I'm kind of liking the Voice of Reason (thanks Andrew!), lol...but...that two band is just SO nice to look at. Then again, I don't NEED a new brush anyway...grrr...

Simpsons Emperor 2 (2 band) + Soap + face lathering = a very nice combination

The Rooney I use I usually use with a Bowl.

That's only my opinion :em2100:

I have an older 2B tulip 2 and a Rooney 3/1 finest. Both outstanding brushes IMO. If you buy it and don't like it (them), you can always sell it again.

I can't tell you about a 2 band Rooney, but I can tell you about a 2 band Simpson. I had a 3/1 Rooney and it was too dense, rough, and prickly. As a result, I couldn't spend a lot of time trying to break it in, so I sold it. With the Rooney, I had to apply more pressure to try to get the lather from the brush to my face. The 2 band Simpson with the bulb shape out of the box had no problems with building a proper lather. The 2 band, the hair has more spring to it and it maintains it's shape very well. Also, the Simpson has a much better flow thru than the Rooney. If you like the 3/1, don't overlook the PJ2. Also, you can check out this link http://www.shaving101.com/index.php/product-reviews/3-brushes/42-rooney-11-finest-badger.html .
WCS has the best price on the two bands.Use the code BANDB and receive 10% off !
Good luck. Happy shopping!

Have you considered the Rooney Heritage line?

My Alibaba size 1 (I have since sold it) was uber-dense, and has slightly shorter loft than your current brush. Plenty of backbone, but not prickly at all.

Add that to your "ponder" list....

Ponder-gears engaged!

I WAS looking at the Rooney Heritage line as well, but am still on the fence. The ones in the line using "Super" are the same grade of hair as my 3/1 Super, are they not?

You should look at the Heritage line in Finest, go to this link:
