What's new

considering a new Merkur open comb razor

I have been using a DE razor for about a year now. I am still using the vintage black plastic handled Tech that I started with. After doing some reading, I think my beard would shave easier with an open comb due to the weird grain pattern on my neck. I wanted to try the Merkur 11c because I also want to go to a heavier razor, but it has been discontinued. The 15c looks like the same head design as the 11c but with a three-piece lighter weight handle. Does any one here have any experience with these razors? I would appreciate any info you have on them. I am also not opposed to trying the long handled versions of them either.

Welcome to B&B jmball!

I have a 15C and it's quite a nice razor. The 15C will be lighter than the discontinued 11C, but it's still plenty heavy in my opinion. It's considered a mild OC, but I do find it effective on my neck espescially.

My suggestion would be to give it a try. You can always try parting ways with it on the BST if you end up not liking it once your post count goes up a little. :001_smile

A vintage Gillette Old Type, a New Long-Comb, or a Single Ring might be a good option to see if OCs are for you. Also, the Cadet and RazoRock OCs could be other options as they are quite inexpensive. Good luck.

I agree with the suggestions above, there are so many options out there that will fit the bill If you end up with a 3 piece razor this will allow you to change the handle around to lighter or heavier depending on your mood, I have a few Gillette New long and short combs that I enjoy doing this with.

Awaiting the supplies from my first order. Should be here tomorrow. Included is my first OC razor, a Merkur 25C (decently well-spoken of)... I'm only mentioning this because the model seems to be readily available although I don't have a clue how it'll suit me. Diving in head first... how bad could it be? Sometimes one has to take a leap of faith. :)

I think that is a great choice, I actually would prefer that model over the 11C due to it being more versatile, I am not a huge fan of the 2-piece razor.

Glad you concur. :) To hedge my bet, I also ordered a Goodfella, with the same thoughts (expressed above) in mind. Either I'll like them or I won't. They'll stay or go... nothing's set in stone. I think the comparison will be interesting, if not fun... but I'm looking forward to the fun of it. And I'll take my time. No rush.

Have you considered a 37c or 39c slant? They will be as mild as your Tech but a LOT more efficient so will give you a closer smooth shave.
