What's new

Considerations for plateing

I was given my great grandfathers 1926 Gilette New last year. Love the shave it gives even more than my two Murkers. Like many, I find that they struck just the right balance between this and that to come up with one damn fine handle. Anyway, it has a brass handle and a copper head. The threads feel loose, though it tightens up properly and is not a problem. I could never part with the razor, been in the family since it was brand new and besides it's just to good of a shave to part with it, but I would kind of like to have it plated, probably nickle plate vurses chrome. What thoughts do you have keeping in mind that valuation is something that will be left up to someone else, perhapes 50 years on...?

Forget about valuation, sentimental value aside. Once it has been replated it is no longer collectible. And if it needs replating, it is not collectible. So do what makes you happy. If it were mine I would probably choose nickel, too.

Out of curiosity, though... really 1926? It could be a 1926 New Improved, but the NEW did not start until 1929 at the earliest. Then again your mention of a copper-rich brass cap sounds more like a NEW. We always like pictures....

Well if your going to replate i would advise NOT sending it to Razor Emporium.
Also im interested in having my fatboy replated but do not know who is out there to do it.

It could be a prototype?? make it even rare er

This begs a question though. If the replating is done really well, how does a collector distinguish it from an original? There's often debate about whether some of the near mint or mint razors on eBay have been replated.

You can ask some of the members on here. Some get it done, possibly locally although I'm not sure. Seems like there's been a lack of members on here doing it, but I think you can find something. Maybe you can find someone local to you who you can look up for reviews.

If you want to have it plated locally, you might try looking for places that re-plate old car parts. Think interior door handles, window cranks, knobs, etc... They often have experience preserving details and do good jobs.

I am not sure why I am saying it is a 1926 New, I went back and found my first post, with pictures, where I believed to have been told which model it was, but it is not in there. Here is the link: http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/142935-Here-it-is-as-requested!?highlight=

My opinion on replating a sentimental razor is to forget about collectibility..... it's never going to be worth as much to someone else as it is to you. It was your great grandfather's after all. I like the idea of replating it.... you know, renewal. Give it a new life.... that's what our parents and grandparents did for us. Replate it the way YOU like. We're like our parents, but we're different too. I'd go rhodium or nickel myself.

Here is how I look at it. Leave it as it is and buy another one like it. Replate that one. How sentimental can it be if you change it? I have a couple of my dad's razors and I don't even bother to use them, I have others, easily and cheaply enough obtained.

I have my grandfathers slim adjust and my great grandfathers 40's Super Speed. I plan to have them re-plated to basically the same plating (or as close as possible) to the original plating they had out of the factory.

If it was a rare collectable razor (double ring, toggle, etc.) I'd leave it in it's original condition. The slim adjusts, SuperSpeeds, even the Gillette New aren't really that rare for user grade, and I like the idea of it looking as close as possible to how it looked when my family first obtained it.
