confused fragrance newbie

Hi there, I'm a year and a half into DE shaving with great success. I've been stuck in a rut with fragrances but have recently discovered Crabtree And Evelyn Sandalwood, which I love. How do I choose a body spray to complement this? -I need to get away from my supermarket sprays like Lynx etc as I'm sure they're not wholly good for the skin and don't exactly smell great to be fair. Secondly, can someone fill me in on the difference usages of EDT and EDP. I understand that the actual amount of fragrance differs between the two but it seems that a lot of mens fragrances are only EDT. Does this mean you guys carry a bottle around with you and keep reapplying? While I've been typing this I've rethought and simplified my question-----how do I smell nice all day? Thanks, Kurt

Believe the C&E Sandalwood you are speaking of is an edt (cologne). It is a "body spray" to be worn for fragrance. I believe C&E also makes either a Sandalwood aftershave splash or balm; that is worn on the face after shaving. If by "body spray" you mean a deodorant, that is something different - like Right Guard.

To answer your second question http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/317423-EDT-vs-Cologne

To add regarding re-spraying, that is a question of longevity (how long the fragrance lasts on the skin), and that will vary with the particular edt/edp/whatever. Some that are relative weak may require reapplication, but generally speaking most edts will last in the six hour range. Biggest thing to be careful of is over application. Because you will be closest to the scent, your own nose might become desensitized to the fragrance such that you don't smell it - but others still might!!

To answer the question about a spray to keep the scent going, I would strongly advise against that practice. Unfortunately, humans suffer from olfactory-fatigue when wearing colognes. Your mind tunes out the scent after it establishes that it's not a threat and lets you go about your day. Great for burnt popcorn, not so great when wearing that new Tom Ford scent you just picked up. You'd be surprised how much some scents linger well after you can't pick them up. Recently I went to get my haircut and the second the lady walked behind me to put on the cape she said, "What are you wearing? It smells amazing!" It was roughly 11 hours since I applied cologne that morning and at least 5 hours since I stopped smelling it. Just because your nose can't smell it does't mean others can't. Don't be that guy.

It seems you answered your own question on the differences between EdT and EdP but just for further clarification:

From Wikipedia

  • Perfume extract, or simply perfume (extrait): 15-40% (IFRA: typical 20%) aromatic compounds
  • Esprit de Parfum (ESdP): 15-30% aromatic compounds, a seldom used strength concentration in between EdP and perfume
  • Eau de Parfum (EdP), Parfum de Toilette (PdT): 10-20% (typical ~15%) aromatic compounds, sometimes listed as "eau de perfume" or "millésime." Parfum de Toilette is a less common term that is generally analogous to Eau de Parfum.
  • Eau de Toilette (EdT): 5-15% (typical ~10%) aromatic compounds
  • Eau de Cologne (EdC): Chypre citrus type perfumes with 3-8% (typical ~5%) aromatic compounds. "Original Eau de Cologne" is a registered trademark.
  • Perfume mist: 3-8% aromatic compounds (typical non-alcohol solvent)
  • Splash (EdS) and aftershave: 1-3% aromatic compounds. "EdS" is a registered trademark.

Everybody's body chemistry is different, a fragrance that lasts all day on me, may be short lived on you. You just have to try different frags to see what you like the best. Gary's Sample Shop and Archfire Decants are great vendors that sell samples and decants of some really nice frags that way you don't have to buy full sized bottles just to realize that the frags aren't for you.

Men's EDTs very often have long lasting woody or leathery basenotes. As such they last as long or longer than very many women's EDPs which instead very often have floral basenotes (that don't last as long as the men's basenotes). I've bought plenty of women's EDPs which only lasted four or five hours on the ladies I gave them to.

The vast majority of men's EDTs will last a full working day (7 or 8 hours) or more when worn under clothes. Plenty of men's EDTs last 24 hours or more. Some can last for days. Joop Homme lasts for over 12 days on shirts sprayed with it.

Designer scents for men have EDTs which usually last significantly longer than the more expensive niche EDTs last (although there are some long lasting niche fragrances).

And to confuse matters, I have bottles of EDT and EDC (Eau de Cologne) of Guerlain Vetiver made at the same time, where one would think the EDC should be weaker. The EDT is definitely the stronger smelling one, but it conks out after about 6 hours, whereas the weaker EDC lasts twices as long.
Regards,
Renato
