I just received my new Muhle R89 yesterday and started to compare it to my EJ DE89L. The Muhle weighs in at 2.2 ounces and is 4/10 of an ounce less than the 2.6 ounce EJ, and that lower weight is in the handle. I find that the lighter handle of the Muhle R89 seems to act like the head of the razor is heavier than the head of the EJ DE89, even though they are the same head.
I tried my first shave with the Muhle today, using the Muhle on my right side and my EJ on my left side, both with a brand new Feather blade. This perceived heavier head on the Muhle seems to have made a slight improvement in that I can get a smoother first pass as compared to the first pass on the EJ.
I also like the feel of the Muhle handle better than the EJ DE89L handle. The Muhle has a cross cut / diamond cut knurling on the handle, which for me is easier to keep hold of compared to the vertical lines of the EJ handle.
Both razors provide excellent results and I still need to use the new Muhle more to make a better determination, but my initial thoughts are that the Muhle will offer a closer shave as the weight of the head adds to the natural pressure of gravity on that lighter handle compared to the EJ.
