Cologne Question

Howdy y'all!

I am interested in picking up another fragrance. I have Hani Mori, Brooks Brothers Classic, D&G The One, and Brooks Brothers New York Gentleman.

I am divided as to wether I should be Brooks Brothers New York Gentleman (3.0oz I think) and it comes with the cologne and aftershave balm from Brooks Brothers Outlet $75.00

or

Polo by Ralph Lauren (Original) I think it's 3.0 oz. I'm not sure (one bottle).

What do you all B&Bers think? Or are there any other suggestions?

Best,

Jerry

@Matt555

Where can I get that? And is it the same thing that is sold in BB stores? Can I get both the cologne and aftershave?

I'm not familiar with the Brooks Brother's fragrances, so I can't speak to that option for you.

The original Polo "green" by Ralph Lauren on the other hand is legendary. It comes in a 2, 4, or 8 oz. bottle. This is one of the best fragrances ever created or possibly it's just nostalgia is speaking for my nose. Probably the latter as this was my first ever bottle of fragrance back in the 80s when I was too young to be wearing fragrance. Especially Polo.

The only negative thing I will say about this stuff is that it has a bad reputation because it was ever so slightly over-used back in its stardom. Back in the 80s people showered in Polo and there are some who still do. It is so distinctive that you can spot/sniff it a mile away and for some, it can spark a negative memory association or have a negative connotation. I have a bottle and still love this stuff, but I don't wear it in public for fear of the recognition.

Back in the 80s and early 90s when I showered in this stuff like the masses, I lived in a small farm community defunct of any type of shopping mall. The closest one was well over an hour drive and I didn't know anyone else at all who wore it. I thought I was being bravely and uniquely "me". Little did I know that people in the rest of America and other parts of the world abused this stuff just like I did. I still love this juice, but I only wear it around the house when looking for a trip down memory lane.

It is still one of the best.

Polo is actually a great scent. It really is. But I echo Tehtimehs concerns that it was overused. I wouldn't tell anyboyd that likes it not to wear it, but use it in moderation.

I think part of what's standout about it was that it was kind of bold new direction for men's fragrances when it came out. My memory is kind of like Polo was the "shyt." Maybe I'm romanticizing it since it was my first "department store" frag. It was also readily available, and if memory serves, there just weren't a lot of other choices at the time.

I would however tell anyone using Obsession to "move on."

Tim,

Is Polo a fragrance you would recommend? Every time I smell this I love it!

Here is the base notes.com entry on polo:

At the end of the day, wear what you like. Like Stylin said, I certainly wouldn't tell anyone not to wear it. I personally don't wear it out for the reasons mentioned above, but I have great memory associations with the scent unlike some others.

Also agree on the moderation front. If you end up going with Polo, take it easy on the trigger. One spray is enough of this one. If it's a factor - I'd bet women in their late 30s and 40s still swoon when they smell Polo!

I suggest you buy a pile of samples. I don't know how many colognes are available, but I'm pretty sure I've already read hundreds of reviews. How many do you want to blind buy? My suggestion would be none.

Jerry, in your original post, you say you already have Brooks Brothers New York Gentleman, as well as HM, BB Classic and D&G The One. Is that a typo? Do you have those others, to0?

Like the others here, I also think Polo original is a benchmark cologne. Many of us who either wore it or were around others who wore it back in the day would recognize it immediately. Another like that, for me, is Aramis. Both are great scents. Both are very powerful and project like crazy and last all day and night. I love the smell of both, but don't wear them now as they seem dated to me, because of scent memory. Not bad memories at all, just a blast from the past.

The sampling suggestion is a good one, too. There are options online if you don't have brick & mortar access. Check out Archerfire ( http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showth...ants-December-New-Items?p=4714139#post4714139 ) or Garry's Sample Shop ( http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showth...mp-Back-To-Work-Sale!!!?p=4669160#post4669160 ), although I don't see Polo original listed in Garry's site.

For other suggestions, if you're in a Brooks Brothers store I'd suggest you check out Brooks Brothers 1818.

Yes jake I do have all of those fragrances:) have you smelled the Black fleece by BB? Or the Country Club by BB? Any of the Royall scents?

The polo green is a lot heavier scent. I have all the brooks brothers scents and you Cain't go wrong with any of them. If it were me I'd go brooks brothers, the 1818 is my favorite that they have.

I ended up buying both the brooks brothers New York gentleman and the polo (green bottle). I love them both but really like the polo!
