What's new

colgne suggestions?

I'm thinking of getting samples or decants of some Penhaligon's and Creed fragrances, and I'd appreciate the group's input to help me narrow down the choices. A little guidance from my experimentation so far:

  1. I like Floris No. 89 and Floris Santal (although not as much as the No. 89)
  2. I like the scent of C&S No. 88, but it's too rosy for me to really wear.
  3. I kind of like Knize Ten but it's also just not something I would wear.
  4. I don't like Blenheim Bouquet or English Fern.
So? Where do I go from here?

Thanks.

If you like Knize Ten but think it's a little extreme, you might like Creed's Royal English Leather. It's a much warmer leather and very wearable. It's also more reasonably priced than most of Creeds (to my mind) overpriced ranges.

If you think C&S 88 is too rosy, keep away from Hammam Bouquet. A truly unholy fragrance.

I don't like Blenheim Bouquet or English Fern either. If I was forced to get a Penhaligon's fragrance, it would probably be Duoro (Lords). A perfectly pleasant Eau de Portugal. On the other hand, 4711's Portugal EdT is every bit as good at a much more reasonable price.

Since you preferred Floris No. 89, you may want to try something similar. It is a citrus floral scent and it composition is:

Top notes: bergamot, lavender, neroli, nutmeg, orange, petitgrain
Heart notes: geranium, rose, ylang ylang
Base notes: cedarwood, musk, oakmoss, sandalwood, vetiver

You may want to try D’Orsay Etiquette Bleue, if you can find it. It is very old school and I should add that I do not favor either scent.

Why not order the sampler from London Bathecary?

www.shoplondons.com

That seems to have a number of scents I'm not that interested in. I wonder if it's customizable.

Edit: I should add that I know they have bothPenhaligon's and Creed at Saks in NYC, but my office is the other direction from the train station, and it would probably require several visits/spritzes.

I do not care for Pen's BB, but I like Opus 1870 a lot!! Maybe worth a try for you.

Actually, I emailed Penhaligon's US rep and they sent me a much better selection than the stuff you get in the sampler. I wonder why I ordered the sampler anyway? Must have been a drunken late night PayPal binge.

From Penhaligon's:
Endymion
Castile
Opus

Others:
Guerlain Vetiver
Eau Sauvage
Tam Dao

If you want to spend some cash, also try Creed Bois du Portugal

The L'Occitane Eau des BAUX EdT has a very peppery/woodsy/vanilla note, is not unreasonably priced, and is readily available.

You might want to give it a try.

Is "bois" in Bois du Portugal pronounced the same way as in Blanche DuBois?

Yes, "bwah"

When this scent was introduced, I gather it was very popular in Nieman Marcus' home base city, Dallas.

A lot of the Texans liked to call it "Boys du Portugal."

What did they think of Cuir de Russie

I'd love to hear. Whatever they did call it, you can bet the farm that the Nieman clerks grabbed a bottle quick with a smile on their face.

I still can't figure out how to pronounce Odori's "Cuoio." My faux Italian is weak, and I live in fear someone will ask me what scent I'm wearing.
