What's new

Coates for christmas

So i ask for a tub of Coates in my stocking and after searching the reviews I can only find reviews for the old formula before it was taken off the market. As with alot of us Mantic's videos have taught me alot and I wanted to try it since he seemed to like the old style.

So has anyone anything to say about the newer limited edition cream?

There were a couple of thread about this cream in the last few weeks. I have it, performance is good, but for me my skin feels irritated during the shave. Many others have reported irritation, burning, etc from this cream, possibly from the tea tree oil. Something to consider.

here are a few personal observations...

the cream is pearlescent and very concentrated. only a small bit is required to whip up some great lather.

i use tea tree oil products and they typically don't irritate my skin, but i do feel a slight tingly burn with this cream. nothing major.

the scent is light and pleasant and it works well.

i wouldn't be surprised if coates tweaks the formula a bit before they go back into fullscale production.

I just received a sample of this and tried it a few times. I haven't seen anything negative really written about this cream, and before I received the sample I almost purchased a tub on several occasions.

I have a little bit left of an old formula tub of the Sandalwood, and while I don't care for the scent, the lather and shave it provides is top-notch. Now having said that, I don't like the new formulation Coate's at all. The lather didn't provide enough cushion, although it was slick enough. There was that tingly burning feeling while face lathering, but nothing too bad. As for the smell... well this is very subjective, but to me I strongly disliked it. The rosemary note is very odd and off-putting, and I don't think it really belongs anywhere but the kitchen anyway . The tea tree scent would have been fine on it's own as it smells medicinal. I'm not even a huge fan of lavender as a scent really, but that and tea tree sound like a pretty amazing combo. Rosemary and tea tree though? Very odd to my olfactory. Thankfully enough the scent is so mild you won't notice it much after lathering it up anyway.

as an ex coates rose user I've been waiting for coate's return for yearsS the early reviews are disappointing. i"ll give them some time to sort out their formula.

I'm really quite happy using Nancy Boy so Coates will have to equal or exceed their old formulation for me to switch back.

I'm glad I got a sample before I decided to buy a whole tub. The performance was great, but it irritates the crud out of my face. It was bad enough for me, that lathering for a second pass was just shy of unbearable. I typically have not had any issues with tea tree, so I wonder if it's some other part of the mix.

If you can, I suggest trying a sample first.
Edit: I loved the scent. There wasn't much tea tree in mine, but the combination of what was there and the rosemary almost gave it the smell of desert sage brush.

I seem to be a bit of a Jonah when it comes to shaving products: no sooner had I decided i was going to spend the rest of my life scraping off Coates Tea Tree with a "Swedish" Gillette than they both went off the market.

So I got really excited about the "new" Coates cream, but it really is that, a new cream, Why couldn't they have just asked Creighton's to whip up a new batch of the old formula?

That said, it's quite nice, lots of lather but without the incredible sense of adhesion and smoothness the old Tea Tree offered. Also the pleasantly antiseptic smell of teatree has been replaced by an overpowering scent of rosemary, which is a bit offputting and belongs in the kitchen IMHO.

Still, if you don't mind your chops smelling like lamb...

I feel the same way every time I dip into my remaining (and rapidly dwindling) stash of original formula TOBS rose and avocado, Coates rose and lime, and any no longer produced Penhaligon's creams. That's the bad news.

The good news is that this hobby never ceases to amaze with the extraordinary depth and breadth of products it offers. So while I lament the demise of Coates and Taylor rose, I'm assuaged by the appearance of equally great AoS and Harris rose creams. Penhaligon's Castile fades over the horizon, but eShave pops into view. Some remove tallow from their soap; others put it in.

So every time I feel suicidal about the loss of such great friends, I make a mental note of the incredible products that remain, and I don't feel so bad. The remarkable soaps from C&S and AoS, the plethora of world class creams, the amazing array of products from QED, Proraso, GFT, DRH, SCS, Speick, and countless others put in in perspective.
