Clubman Special Reserve as a blind buy?

Is it true it smells like a well worn baseball glove!? I love the smell of leather and would really like to purchase some but should I get the small half ounce bottle from ebarbershop first to sample it or go for the whole bottle?

Lets hear your opinions on this AS!

It does smell absolutely fantastic. I really appreciate all of Clubman's masculine scents. If you like the old school masculine appeal then you can't go wrong with this. I would go for the whole bottle.

To me it's more smokey/woody with some sweetness to balance it out, but there's some leather in there as well. I'd agree with j.mattfield that it's a great old-school masculine fragrance. It's one of my favorites. If you're already purchasing something else, this isn't terribly expensive so you might as well throw a bottle in your basket.

I think Special Reserve is excellent for the price. Not for me for on a daily usage basis but a nice addition to an AS rotation.

Lots of people really like it, and in the bottle, I did too. It just smelled terrible once I applied it to my skin. YMMV. It just didn't mix with my chemistry well at all, so I gave the bottle away. In the bottle it smelled super manly-like. On me it smelled like baby powder and old lady perfume. My wife walked in the bathroom and said, "What's wrong in here??" It was me.

I was using it during the fall, I found the woodsy and worn leather smell to fit the season quite well.

I have since switched back to my first after shave, Aqua Velva, for the winter. (I find the menthol compliments the wintry air quite well.)

I am a bit fan of Clubman scents in general, I use their Lilac Vegetal in the spring and their Bay Rum in the summer as well.

Splash some on and you will be immediately drawn back to a day when men smelled like men and were proud of it.
It brings to mind bourbon, rum, cigars, poker, and well worn leather.

Even my cat likes it.

This is one of my favorite smells of any AS I have. I don't get any powder notes to it at all but TONS of leather. This is definitely a gem of a blind buy.

If you want to put it over the top, as soon as you open it, fill most of the empty space in the top of the bottle with glycerin. It takes it to a whole new level of performance.

Totally different.
Regular Clubman might compare to Canoe. I don't even know where to begin comparing SR except it might remind you of English Leather, but more complex.
Thanks -- and to breadstick, as well. I like Clubman ok... but it has great longevity on me and the powdery scent ends up very bothersome. It's just not what I like, I guess (I'm ok with it, at first). So "no powder" is a good start.

I have Pinaud's clubman talc, which (strangely) I'm fine with. I like the powder to smell like powder. Hmmm.

I'll think I'll spring for the whole bottle!:biggrin1:

Aftershave lasts me quite a while so should I decant into a glass bottle?

You can decant it if you like, but I haven't had any problems with anything happening to CSR in the plastic bottle. Lilac Vegetal seems to do better in glass, but the rest of the Pinaud ranges are fine as they are. If you would rather have it in a glass bottle, go for it. You can also find old glass Pinaud bottles on eBay pretty regularly. Get one of the ones with Napoleon on the label and you'll be ready to go.

Bought SR yesterday on a blind buy. Was not thrilled with the smell. Like someone said, it smells like old lady perfume. Definitely, did not remind me of a barbershop. YMMV

I have tried again and again to like it... I just cant. I love regular Clubman and Clubman Musk... but cant wear the SR very often.
