Chubby 2 vs Stubby 2XL - Ease of Making Lather

Over time I've come to realize that certain brushes simply whip up lather easier than others and/or they release it and spread it around on your face a little easier. I once had a brush that felt wonderful on my face. I'd say gel-like feel, but I'm not wholly sure I know what that is. The problem with it was that it acted as an "eraser" of soap on my face. It was so dense and packed that it was almost as if it was a single foam pad and rather than putting lather down, it wiped it off. Does anyone here know what I'm talking about, or is it just me?

Anyway, I've got a Chubby 1 in Super 2-band that I want to sell to get money, or trade, to get either a Chubby 2 or a Rooney 2XL. Feel free to make any comments you'd like, but I'm especially interested in how easily either brush can make lather, and easily it distributes it across the face. For the Chubby I'd probably go with either Super 3-band or Best (love my Duke 2 in Best). Don't know if those two would be different with respect to this lathering question but would be interested to know if anyone has an opinion on that.

I've had the Chubby 2 in Manchurian and 2-band, and currently have it in Best and Super. I've also had (and have) multiple variations of the 2XL (gel and non-gel).

I also had a Chubby 1 2-band, and found it just to be a bit too dense and a little too much of the lather hog. I had the same experience with the CH2 2-band and manchurian, which is why I let them go. The best/super hairs are more flexible, which allow the brush to release and produce lather with greater ease. These are now among my favorite brushes.

I have ... 5 Rooney 2XLs, so that should tell you how much I love the brush. I had some older 2XLs (non-gel) that were incredibly soft, but due to the raw density and fan shape, still had some difficulty releasing lather. The most recent generation 2XL that I purchased from vintage blades in march is actually about 20% less dense than the older 2XLs, and more a semi-hybrid bulb, which makes this an amazing brush with superior latherability and release.

That said, I wouldn't necessarily call any of these brushes "uber latherers" just due to their raw density. They require a lot more product and a lot more work, but most feel that it's worth it.

For a brushes that make ridiculously good lather with almost no effort - I'd look at the Thater 4125/2, SR3824, and Rooney Emillion 2. These are all medium-dense brushes with very soft tips (each with their own characteristics), that have incredible flow through and require minimal amounts of soap/cream.

The stubby 2XL knot has definately a better flow through than the Chubby 2.I have a CH2 best which is known to be a lather hog. It got better after maybe 25 uses and the feeling in the face is unique. It's the highest amount of hair in any brush I have and I wouldn't want to part with it but hands down when it comes to flow through the 2XL is excellent.

Thanks to you both. Yella, your input is great since you've had a bunch of them. I've got an M&F Emillion, probably a 2 but maybe a 3. It is a wonderful brush. And I've got a Chief which is great too in every way including lathering easily and spreading it around easily. I've had both a regular Shavemac and Thater that I sold because I thought them just a bit too soft - although I do agree with you that both lathered easily and gave up their lather easily. I'm afraid there may come a day when I regret getting rid of them. I've still got a Kent BK8 that I think also fits in that category. I wait for more input but both of these responses would point me more towards a newer Rooney 2XL.

For me, I found that brushes that are 27+mm have too much hair in the brush to have really great flow through. However, I did find that the Rooney 2XL had much better flow through than my Chubby 2 in Best or 2-band Super. Contrary to what was posted earlier, I found that my Chubby 1 in 2-band Super was excellent in the flow through department. Flow through is important to me because what's the point in making all this lather if you can't use any of it? I find the Tulip to be a great alternative to a Chubby if you decide to stick with Simpsons, and it is a brush that I prefer to the 2XL.

Unfortunately I've only a Rooney 2XL that was purchased from Vintage Blades, but I love it. It has great flow through, but does require a bit of product and a little more work than some of my other brushes. I love the density and face feel, though.

I have a Rooney 2XL and a Chubby 2 in Super. The Rooney has better flow and is better at making lather and distributing it on the face. However, the feel of the Chubby when used for face lathering, which is what it excels at, is unequalled by any other brush.

Best, 3-band, or 2-band?

I have a Chubby 2 in 2-band, Rooney Stubby size 2, and a Rooney 2XL size 2. I have not specifically compared flow issues, but I would not characterize any of these brushes as a particularly troublesome lather hog. All three are great and in my rotation. If I had to choose I would probably go with one of the Rooney's.

They are both great brushes. I prefer my Rooney Heritage Stubby 2XL Two Band Super to my Chubby 2 Three Band Super. The tips are softer and it's a little bit smaller and closer to an ideal size for face lathering. I find the flow through about the same on both.... as they are both two of the most densely packed knots that I own.

Both great knots that I love. Both extremely dense and fat knots, which makes for worse flow through. Just takes a bit more product and a bit more water to get the lather started, the 2xl maybe takes a little longer owing to the extremely short loft. But there is nothing like that gel/scrubby sensation of the 2xl when face lathering with hot water.

I have a couple of 2XL's with the heritage hair and I love them. The perfect brush for a face latherer. Great flow through, backbone and soft tips.

I had a CH2 in super and traded it for a Duke 3 in Manchurian. It gives the 2XL's a run for their money. Have you considered a Duke?

I have a Duke 2 in Best that is one of my favorite brushes. Not sure why I just don't move up to a Duke 3 and see if that satisfies me. If not, then I could always think about a bigger Chubby or Stubby XL.
