Chubby 2 or Duke 3 for bowl lathering?

I bought a Chubby 1 a couple of months ago and I absolutely love it for face lathering soaps. I want to get a brush that is good for bowl lathering and I am torn between the Chubby 2 and the Duke 3. Which would be a better choice for bowl lathering? I bowl lather with creams and face lather with soaps. :confused1

I have both and I'm primarily a bowl latherer. Without doubt, the Chubby2 is a much superior bowl brush,at least for me,it is.

I agree with Craig 100%. The Chubby ll is the perfect size for bowl or face lathering. You can't go wrong with best or super badger but I personally find best hair to be very scritchy. Ymmv as usual!

I'd go with a Chubby 2.

Duke 3 has a 24mm knot, 50mm loft & 47mm tall handle (97mm overall height)
Chubby 2 has a 28mm knot, 51mm loft & 44 mm tall handle (95mm overall height)

The knot is the difference here, dense, holds a lot more water and lathers great for soap and creams.
Although - you will use a lot more cream with a chubby2 - eats it up!

If you are going down the Chubby 2 route, then you have to consider the 2band or 3band.

lu20t posted a pic of duke 3 side by side to chubby2

The Duke 3 is for me a better "multi-purpose" brush. The Chubby 2 and the entire Chubby line are best suited for face lathering. Other great all-rounders are the brushes in the Fifty and Polo Series. Of course this is a very personal thing, or as we say here IMHO.

These are two very different sized brushes; the current runs of Chubby 2s have 28-29 mm knots and lofts between 50-52 while the Duke 3s 24-25 mm with 47-48 mm lofts. While a 4 mm larger knot does not seem like a lot, it in fact has significantly more hair. There is a reason that the Chubby is 2X the price of the Duke. While, IMHO, I think most brushes are fine with either face or bowl lathering, I agree 100% with Marco that bowl lathering is not the Chubby's forte. My personal preference, and that's all it is, is for a somewhat longer handle and less density when bowl lathering. The legendary density & water retention of the Chubby is fantastic for face lathers but works against you in the bowl where you want most of the lather outside the brush and you can easily adjust the water content a few drops at a time. Like Jeremy (Cessnabird) I prefer the Super hair and I'd be looking at the Persian Jar, Emperor, and as Marco said, the Polo.

+1 the entire chubby line's strong suit is a face lather. I cannot think of a better simpson brush for both face and bowl lathering (multi purpose) than a duke. They are tremendous performers and for the price, they are worth every bit.

My 58 in best will be here tomorrow and I may possibly order a second in 2 band. I love my Emperor3 I just wish it was a little bit bigger. Not much just one size up. I am so excited : ))

Great. We don't see many reviews of the 50 series here. Looking forward to seeing what you think.

Thanks for the replies guys. Now the Simpson 58 is starting to look good to me!

I have the 58 in best. I use it for face lathering and it is superb, but its handle length would make it excellent for bowl lathering as well. The 58's knot size is about the same as the Duke 3 and the loft size are just a tad longer- 1-2mm. One might say that the 58 is like the Duke 3 with an erection. Wouldn't it be great to have a brush that always seems glad to see you?

I recently debated a Chubby vs Duke as well and ended up with a Classic on an impulse buy off the BST. The next week I went to Merz Apothecary in Chicago and saw a chubby 2 in person and had some serious buyers remorse. I will say I haven't seen a Duke first hand, but I can't imagine it being off the charts better than the chubby. Only thing that might be a consideration for you is the bowl lathering aspect. The chubby handle is pretty small compared to a Fifty or Polo per Marco and others suggestions.
