Chubby 1 in 2 band - small?

$IMG_0709.jpg

So with the Simpson Minimum Pricing Policy in front of us (basically a 20% price hike for most vendors) I thought I add another 2 band to my collection before those prices go up :)
So I got myself the Chubby 1 in 2 band. I thought the Chubby 2 would be too big and scrubby. So I went with the smaller cousin. I already own a Chubby 1 in Super 3 band.

It arrived yesterday and my first reaction was: wow - this is a small brush. 23/45mm to be precise, i.e. a bit shorter than spec. Furthermore, in this case the bulb is not an advantage as the brush is so dense that the knot feels very pointy when face lathering. The tips, however are very soft as with the other 2 bands I own.

Right now, I am a bit disappointed. The knot may open up a bit more with use but from all the (7) 2 band Simpson I own this is the least convincing one...

Closer to 20% more... It is quite noticeable more dense.
Is there that a slight change for the Ch1 handle? The handle look short and has a much more 'Chubby' look, the bottom band also thicker than others Ch1 brushes i saw.
What you think about the D3 handle comparing to this new Ch1? Is the D3 handle more comfortable to use?
Thanks.

I think the Chubby 1 has a too small and short handle. Will never be in my collection for that reason alone :biggrin1:

You made a wise choice ordering the Chubby 2 in 2-Band. Mine is still among the best brushes I've tried so far for face lathering......love the Chubby 2 handle

C1 handle in the 2 band is the same as my C1 in Super. Both are a bit shorter loft than spec (45mm). The D3 handle is more comfortable, but I do not have an issue with the smaller C1 handle. I own a medium EJ whose handle is even smaller.
I happen to think that it looks pretty good.

How much denser is the Ch1 2 band comparing to the Duke 3 2 band?
10~20% or more?
Thanks.

Give it some time, my Chubby 2 two band felt a little bit pointy until it broke in.

I own all of the Chubbies with different badger hair grades but was interested to see how the CH 1 in 2 Band looked like...Thanks to your post I'm ordering one in the next few minutes...I love my CH 1 in 3 Band Super and the Best version is not shabby, however my CH 2 in 2 Band is tops! Hope to get to my hands on the elusive CH 3 in 2 Band to join it's other brothers.

I like this analogy... Time will tell :001_cool:

This brush is on my list. Was going to be one of my next Simpson purchases actually. but now I'm worried. =( Is it TOO small?

It's a funny thing where an item can be thought of so differently but, for me, the Chubby 1 in 2-band was a little awkward. Generally speaking, if I was seriously considering that brush I would go for a 2-band Duke 3 instead. My reason is that I felt it was too dense and short lofted for comfort. I just couldn't get it opened out or bloomed enough for my liking. Having said that, the Chubby 1 in 3-band Super opens out nicely and is a good latherer.

Another matter is the handle size where I found the Chubby 1 just too squatted. The Chubby 2 is getting into a workable size for it's shape but it's still not what I would call comfortable in comparison to others and the Goliath, a Chubby 3, is the only one of them where I found myself relaxed.

But I have to say that the knots themselves, which I did take a shine to, are incredible in all three sizes.

For me, number one choice in this family has to be the Chubby 3 with 3-band Super - which is just about as luxurious a brush as I care to imagine :001_wub:

I own the Duke 3 and a few more Simpson 2 band and do agree with your observation on the Chubby 1. The 3 band fan in Super opens nicely despite density and short loft. The 2 band is quite pointy so far. I will give it some more time to see if it opens up a bit more. The tips are very soft and rival any Thäter or Rooney 2 band in that regard.

I quite like the increased density compared to the Duke.

Im afraid to say, the brush won't change much after 5 lathers or so.

Either way, your Simpson collection is not complete without a chubby.

I personally prefer my CH1 over the CH2 but I guess this is what I like.

Also good call on getting a brush in before the price hike, I just ordered 3 this morning!

You are probably right. With the Chubby 2 on order I count now 8 Simpson 2 bands - and that is as much as I want ... only a PJ3 is potentially on my list if Jarrod ever gets some of them in...

Little chance of that Georg after what I've read. Pics of the chubby 2 when it gets here!
