Chanel Antaeus

Hello Gentlemen,

I have been using Antaeus for the last several days and am happy to say that it is a truly wonderful fragrance.
It starts out with a leather, rose and something like orange scent later developing into a woody honey fragrance that just lasts literally all day.
I chose this over rive gauche. I would be interested to see what your thoughts are on this great classic.
Have a good Sunday,
Andy

For whatever reason, this is one that has eluded me. I know it has legendary cult like status to some - like Bill up there (the vintage at least), so I should give it a sniff at some point.

I like Antaeus a lot - with its animalic undertones, it took a little while to grow on me, but I'm very glad it did

I also love Rive Gauche, but it's so completely different I really couldn't compare them.

(In fact, I was just wondering what to have a spray of for the evening, and you've made my mind up for me - Antaeus it is!)

It's great stuff. I find it a little on the "heavy" side for a lot of use in SoCal. I think the current formulation is fine. Elegant, manly. Stands out. Def a classic that is still selling some 30 years after it launched, but I don't think it smells "dated" per se.

But it is one of the few scents which I am jonesing to try the original version. Chanel evidently toned this one down to give it more modern sensibilities. The original version is probably too heavy to use regularly- big 80s powerhouse kind of stuff. Much heavier wallop of castoreum and beeswax.

If you like Antaeus, you might also try Van Clef & Arpels Pour Homme. In the same vein as Antaeus...bold, strong projection, a heavy duty "lingering" effect. Rose and leather. It will stay in a room after you leave. When I want to get my mean 80s black suit on, it's VC&A. While it has a dose of leather, it's not that leathery. Just a strong manly "I want their widows crying" vibe.

I agree, I think chanel must have toned done the recent version but in a good way. After reading that the original was a powerhouse of a scent I had my reservations but boy was I wrong. This stuff is so smooth and long lasting without being overpowering. I found vcaph much stronger in regards to scent. I found it somewhat harsh and dated. Antaeus on the otherhand is constantly evolving on my skin without being loud. It becomes a body scent that for a lack of better words morphs into your own body odor. The last phase around 12 plus hours on my skin is this smooth sweet woody/ honey scent. It is really quality stuff.

I've been wanting to give Antaeus a try. Read this and just blind bought the VCA PH as a throw in with another order. Sounds like my cup of tea, guess I'll find out :)

Ha. Let us know what you think. Potent stuff. "here he comes" and "he was in here" stuff...

Missed this in my post above. I am not man enough for VC&A either. I have tried it and it did not work. Same as Kouros.......maybe one day.......

It's my second favorite leather frag, only Tom Ford Tuscan Leather is better IMHO

I only wear leather frags during fall and winter - so I start wearing my Tuscan Leather, Van Cleef & Arpel PH and Chanel Antaeus in October and up until March (mind you, I own 300+ frags, so I don't always wear these 3 frags during fall & winter, but they are my 3 favorite leather frags of al time)
Love Antaeus - longevity on my skin with the new lighter version is 12 hours solid.

It's a mans man scent - love love it !
A true masterpiece 10/10

A must have in my Wardrobe

Interestingly, when I first wore Dior Leather Oud...I immediately thought it smelled very similar to the first moments of Antaeus. The paths diverge rather quickly after the first few moments, though, and, ultimately, they are two very different fragrances.

Having said that - I own a bottle and really like Antaeus, but I much more prefer Leather Oud (regardless of whether or not there is any genuine oud in it or not).

I love it. I was reading this thread yesterday with my morning coffee and decided to wear Antaeus to work. Unfortunately, having been rocking the Eau Sauvage for the past few days I rather forgot that Anteaus needed a more delicate application. In my enthusiasm I think I really over-sprayed and was probably projecting in a 50ft radius... :blushing:

It wasn't so bad though - The first thing one of the young girls who works in our upstairs office said when she came in was, 'Oh my God, someone smells lush!' Not the reaction I expected Antaeus to produce in someone in her early 20s!

Antaeus is exactly that - Lush!

I've turned heads from 20-50 wearing it in the short time I've been exposed to the vintage juice. I have never tried the current formulation. If I'd had this stuff when I was single, I'd never get married... LOL
