Cartridge Shaving

Does anyone else here cartridge shave? I find I am shaving less and less with my DE's lately. Getting excellent BBS in half the time.

Lately during the week I use my Trac II, Atra or Sensor more often than not. I save my DE shaves for the weekends when I can devote more time.

I wouldn't expect a lot of cartridge fans on this forum.

I did use my promotional Gillette Progtlide Fusion the other day just for grins. The shave did go quickly and without irritation so I can't complain.

However the DE gives a closer longer lasting clean shave.

I prefer the DE shave. But it's fun to mix things up once in awhile.

I found my Trac II (that I hadn't seen in years) in a drawer last week. I've shaved with it a few times now, and my shaves have been a LOT better than the ones I used to get with it back in the day, thanks to the techniques I've learned from using a DE (proper prep, good cream and brush, face mapping, multiple passes, etc.).

I'm still going to be sticking with DE primarily, but the Trac II will make a good travel razor, or for when I'm in a hurry.

I also used my free promotional Proglide earlier this summer (it left me with a lot of bumps and ingrowns), and the Hydro 5 (which may be the worst razor I've ever used in my life... the head is way too large, and then there's all that goo!). Oh yeah, I still haven't received my rebate from Schick! :mad3:

A real good Trac II handle and cartridge is excellent for the head shave.
While I usually face shave with the DE or injector, I shave the head with the Trac II because it is light, fixed headed and very maneuverable. I get fewer angle issues which is a benefit with this.

They can shave well on my face, not BBS, but very well.

Primarily a DE shaver but have used Trac II on occasion when I am in a hurry or in the mood to use one of my after market pewter or other handles. I would agree that the lather and technique make a big difference in any shave. As far as the goo goes...no thank you. My last experience with it (in the hospital, no choice) was awful. It had been many years since I had used it and that experience did nothing to make me even want to think about doing that again.

Mixed shave is my current favorite: I use Trac II for the first pass, and my Slim for the second pass. Works really well. Trac II mows down more stubble than my DE can on the first pass, but nothing beats a DE for a comfortable, smooth second pass.:thumbup1:

Newbies dismiss cartridges because they're still in the rush of learning about DEs. Old hands understand that both tools have their places.
+1

When I go by air, I travel carry-on only. There's just no way I want to hassle with mailing myself blades or trying to track down blades when I get where I'm going; I have too many other things to do. I've yet to find a disposable razor that I like, so cartridges are the only other TSA-friendly option available. I haven't noticed that quality of my shaves suffers much when I use a cartridge; if it does, I'm the only one who notices.

I use Sensor Excell at least once a week when I want to sleep for 30 minutes more in the morning:biggrin1: and I get fantastic BBS shave in about half less time then with the Slant.. but less enjoyable shave.

As far as shaving goes, we DE and Straight users are in a very small minority. We march out of step with the rest of the parade so to speak.

As there are literally millions of cartridge razor users out there they can't all be experiencing poor shaves can they? For various reasons, the visitors to B&B have taken a different route with their daily shaving routines. Neither way is better than the other in my opinion. Live and let live.

Even though I use either a DE or a Straight for the majority of my shaves, there are still three cartridge razors in my bathroom/den - Mach 3, Sensor Excell & Quattro Titanium - and they do go used on odd occasions. The Quattro is for my head and sometimes when in a rush to get out to work the Mach3 or the Sensor will take a turn.

Still learning to use a DE and use the Atra on two snarly patches on my neck. Get a BBS in one stroke...not sure I ever will with the DE. But a pack of carts will probably last me a year.

Like others the prep and lather has done as much as the DE...I use it because it's a lovely machine and it's a challenge. Cheaper? If I don't get The ADs we'll see. But If I ever do go back to carts at least I know how to shave now!

Honestly, I believe the vast majority of people using a cartridge razor are clueless as to proper shaving methods, and yes they do experience bad shaves, frequently!

Prior to discovering this board, I used a Fusion cart for upwards of a month before changing it out, and I got painful significant cuts everyday. Like most people who haven't been enlightened that there is a better way, I just assumed painful blood filled shaves were par for the course, and unavoidable.

To answer the question of the thread, I have a Trac II, Atra, and Sensor, and they typically get used once to twice a week. Some days I just feel like using a cartridge razor. :tongue_sm

I use a Mach 3 every day. I always get very good shaves with it. I change cartridges twice a month, but have gone as long as a month on a single cartridge.

There is no doubt that good preparation, proper lathering techniques and good products are the major components of a good shave. As I have said many times in the past, I believe that the reason so many get poor results with their cartridge razors is because they do not use quality products, and they lack good shaving skills. Many B&B members have noted that their shaves, when re-visited their cartridge razors, were much improved once they had learned how to shave correctly while converting to a DE.

As usual, YMMV.

You change Mach 3 cartridges twice a month? Holy crap! I change them once a week and that's shaving 6 days a week and taking Sundays off. I find that the quality of the shave marginally drops off after the 4 or 5 shave, especially after the lubricating strip wears down. I have good preparation, use quality creams and a best badger brush with proper lathering techniques. The lubricating strip makes for a smoother shave in my opinion, even with good preparation, etc. The blades are still decent after the 6th shave, but I wish the lubricating strip did not wear down so fast.

I use the carts maybe 3 days a week. The TracII or the Atra but less and less the Mach3. I get great shaves with them now that I use a brush, have a prep and a good aftershave.
