Can you get away with this?

Dears fellow members,

I'm considering getting hold of a jnat via my brother in Japan and have found a source for naguras on yahoo auctions. Currently they are selling a set of three, a botan, mejiro and a tanjou. Would I need to go finer? Is a tomo necessary? I know that koma are hard to come by so I've dropped that idea.

This is a long term plan so dont get excited yet, I'm sticking with cotis for the moment but I feel it'd be a shame not to profit from the fact that my bro lives in Japan.

Cheers

Cheers Casus but my question isn't really answered. Is it necessary to get a tomo (I'm not even dreaming about a koma) in order to finish a razor on a jnat? If I get the set of 3 from Japan could I hone from botan through mejiro to tanjou as my finishing nagura?

That all depends on hard your stone is. If the stone is really hard ( like some Asagis ) your going to need to a tomo to create some kind of slurry. To qoute Jimr from Eastern smooth " Honing the razor on ( tomo) honyama slurry is different from the nagura. As you hone, the particles from the honyama will start to break down and get finer and finer. This process is what gives the final, super smooth edge you want, but before that you have to polish out the scratches from the nagura. In order to do this, you will have to balance the honing power of the initial slurry until it is time to finish the polish.

Hope this helps.

Most (not all) of my Mejiro are finer than the Tenjou I have now.
I've finished on Mejiro often, but using a Tomo after has produced finer/smoother edges.
I usually use Koma after Mejiro, and before the Tomo.
I have finished on Tenjou, and I was not thrilled with the result.
Each Nagura can be a little different, so I've had to do some experimenting to find out what works best.

I’m stumped
you should get the set of 3 while you can and look for the Tomo when you pick your stone as it needs to be the same.
My first JNAT is in transit. I have started with a Tomo nagura only with the intention of adding the rest in the near future.
