Can this AD lead to sniffing bug spray?

It was a little chilly this evening so I decided to apply a dab of oud oil before going out and I chose Oriscent Dhul Kifl (similar to Oud Ishaq). Admittedly this one is much thicker than others of my oud selection, but I only applied one small dab to try and keep the enjoyment to myself as much as possible. So I was surprised when a friend of mine who was sitting across the table at a restaurant asked if I could smell bug spray. I have seen on basenotes where reviewers will refer to fragrances smelling like bug spray, but I don't own any bug spray so I cannot make a comparison. Considering how much I enjoy my oud oils I am now concerned that I may begin sniffing bug spray. Has anyone ever heard of oud oils or even oud fragrances being compared to bug spray?

Interesting. It could just be his nose.....However, if this continues happening with other people when you are wearing the same oil, you may want to consider retiring it.

On the bright side, if you notice you're not being bitten by mosquitoes I now have yet another excuse to SWMBO regarding scent purchases - it's to keep the bugs off me

Interesting. I'm not familiar with Oriscent Dhul Kifl, but I generally don't associate oud with bugspray. To me, the classic "bugspray" smell is close to a can of Raid. The most recent time I smelled it was a tester of English Laundry's Arrogant. To me I got immediate top notes of bugspray and detergent. Like a seedy old laundromat.

I put a dab on the other night of a borneo while i was relaxing at home. A friend of mine came over and within a few minutes of walking in asked if I had been smoking pot! I said NO! must be my perfume.
I guess I will NOT be wearing this to work!

One morning a few months back, I had layered Oriscent's Kyara Koutan over some of ASAQ's Blue Ambergris. Cut to that night, 16+ hours later. I was out w/some friends.

Apropos of nothing, one of the guys turned to me. He sniffed, then said, "smells like roach spray in here. Do you smell roach spray?"

We were at a dive bar. Of course, I knew he was talking about me. With a straight face, I said, "hey, look at this place. Are you really surprised you smell roach spray?" He laughed, said something like "guess you're right," & that was that. I was cracking up (to myself!). So re your original question yeah, I've had that experience. :001_cool:

For the record tho, I've also heard someone (a complete stranger, who didn't know what they were smelling or where it was coming from) compare the smell of oud to black pepper. (I was wearing Oriscent's Borneo Kinam that time.) So people's comparisons/scent references are going to be highly personal. Case in point: my wife think's L'Occitane's Cade AS smells like Ajax.

Go figure.

I got the bug spray comment from a family friend once. I believe it was to a Borneo oud. Honestly I was a little offended at first, but like Evan says there's just no telling what scent associations might occur to a person.
