Can Someone Help With A Question on New Standard 1934?

I think the razor I have is the black/red version of the Gillette New Standard (52 grams). Oddly enough, it appears to be two-tone brass/gold.

Did they make a razor like that or is is plating loss?

I ask only because (1) The plating "loss" would be extremely uniform; and (2) I've seen these two-tones sold as intentionally two-toned on the Bay (which I put very little stock in).

I figured it was the 1934 Red Black based on Mr-Razor.com and the weight which matched that site's listed weight.

It is the third from the left in this first pic. Close-ups in the other two pics. The others n the first pics are just the razors I've acquired lately and have been trying out. :)

It looks as if it has been stripped of all plating. I have a few that look like this. I think they look great when polished to a high shine, but they do require a bit more work in order to keep that high shine. The long comb is a great shaver.

The brass heads seen here ,except the Deluxe and the nickle ones, have been stripped and polished.

I think of the four razors pictured, the only one that I'll keep is the 63 flare-tip. I picked it up for about $13 shipped and it is an awesome razor in great shape. It just looks and feels great.

The 40s SS isn't my thing, nor is the Aristocrat. I liked the look of all of them, but don't like the feel. I'm not sure on the open-comb--I really am not sure I want to try an open comb. I had to buy it though, because its look jumped out at me.

EDIT: Thanks for the Link, xillion!

That's what I was thinking. I gotta say, though, I think it looks pretty cool. It's funny because the gold plating left is virtually impeccable!

I don't think there is any gold plating left. The cap and part of the handle is copper. The bottom plate and the threaded part of the handle is brass.

One more question: The head doesn't have a solid bar that fits into the grooved base plate. There are two "pegs" that in instead. I've never seen that in any of the photos I've seen out there of the New Standard. Anyone have any insight into this?

Interesting. Is that how all the razors are made, or just the New?

Edit: Also, that would fully explain why I thought the "gold plating left" was impeccable!

Sure thing. I took that picture the other day for the this thread regarding different Gillette open combs.

Regarding the cap. I have some News that have the full bar and some that do not. Most of my US New heads have come with the full bar cap with tabs on the four corners of the cap.
But I have seen caps with the two pegs instead of the full bar.

The nickle British New heads in my picture came with a cap with two pegs that align with the slot on the bottom plate as seen here.

Whether or not I ever decide to shave with one, in my opinion anopen comb like yours is one of the most beautiful razors out there. It just looks outstanding.

I just had my Sunday late-night shave. Used some TGQ Black Cavendash, my vintage badger-brush I picked up at the pawn shop, my EJ 89L and finished with (1) Clubman (ahhhh); (2) Neroli Aftershave Milk; and (3) a healthy dose of C.O. Bigelow Black cologne.

Now, overkill on the scents maybe, but I find they go well together, and the wife is asleep, so I just get to enjoy the vanilla and woody tones mixed with the Clubman.

Man, what a lifestyle we have all chosen--most relaxing 30 minutes of my week!

Thanks again for all the help of everyone in this thread. It was an education for me!

I've had a couple of NEW's without the full bar on the head cap too. They've all been British NEW's. There were a few variants on the British NEW, some were lighter, like the one xillion pictured - where the slot for the bar was cut into a thin base-plate, and can be seen through the bottom; and some are heavier, where the base plate is thicker, and the slot can't be seen.

I love those heavier NEW heads.
