What's new

Can someone give me some idea of the value of these straights? (pic heavy)part 2

Where I left off in the previous threat.....

This is a Bengall 6/8 it is very old and has lots of staining but no pitting and a good edge. The scales have a few places where it looks like the finish was worn through and its a bit rough but I think this could all be fixed if the scales were polished and a new finish put on them.

If anyone needs more photos or has a question let me know. All help would be appreciated. Thanks for the help.

In Australia Bengall's in that condition go for around Aus$12 - $15. The case looks nice but I am not sure it is the original one as a similar razor I have clearly identifies the Bengall brand name on the case. I did notice though that the blade had been stamped with 'Imported by Lawson of Newburg'. The 'Thistle Brand' may have been Lawson's trading/house name. I guess that those more knowledgeable than me may advise on the 'Thistle Brand'.

The box says $3....

Kidding.

Tony's right, those Bengall down here don't go for much specially that it will need a good clean-up, honing and maybe a bit of buffing on the scales. It looks like horn scales.

As I stated in the original post (part 1) the box is from a thistle brand razor and is not the original Bengall box. but it came with the razor so that is what I keep the razor in to protect it.

All my razors are truly shave ready they were just honed and I have only used them once so they are all as sharp as they can possible get.

As for cleaning I can give them all a good soak in alcohol but there isn't a bottle of barbercide within about 100 km of here. The polishing is not an option because I don't have any of the things needed to do that.

If you like using them, then they're priceless. If you want to know what they're worth to others, then much less.

Are you looking for a price as is or if you just hone the razor or if the razor is restored and honed?

This might not be the most helpful information in the world, but by putting them in an online auction the value will pretty much establish itself. They are worth as much as people are prepared to pay. And if you can't use them they are worthless to you.

The good news is at Christmas time it is a sellers market and they will probably get more now while everyone is in a shopping mood as they will throughout the rest of the year. List them with a reserve which you can live with and cross your fingers.

All 3 razors were just honed and are truly shave ready... I did not hone these myself. I sent them out to be honed. The honemiester is well known and respected for his hone skills here on B&B.

The henckels friodur is for all intents and purpose new it was given to me new many years ago, I recently had it honed by a honemiester then it was used one time by me.

All the razors are very usable shave ready razors. the bengall has stains but thats all, the short henckels has some pitting on the tang and one small spot of pitting about half way up the side of the blade between the edge and the spine. but nothing that would affect the edge so other than a good polish all these razors are good to go. strop them and use them.
