Regarding my choice of the scent today: État Libre d'Orange Éloge du Traître

Yesterday, in my office, I ACCIDENTALLY spilled water from an electric water heater that was filled to the top. Let’s say 1.5 to 2 qt. of water directly over the air condition. Few minutes later, after I dried what I could, I felt the scent of burning plastic … Other than ruined air-condition, no other harm was done. It was a little exciting before I dared to press the switch on the heater but the fear of burning the entire building was stronger.

Anyhow, many coworkers came to complain about the smell. I felt bad. I never even wanted the darn water boiler to be placed over an air condition, nor do I ever use it to heat the water.
Today, another colleague came in the room asking if I’m sure that nothing is still burning. I knew immediately that he’s referring to Éloge du Traître so I just calmly assured him that there is no danger whatsoever. He advised me to open a window; "Something definitely stinks here". Yeah right. The heater is broken, I'm not opening the window today. But that made me wonder, what makes us make the choice for the scent that we will use. I was somehow influenced by yesterday’s event. I didn’t think about it in the morning.

What gives us the impulse to decide about the scent? Is it ever a random choice?

It's never a random choice for me. I don't use a rotation for the week, I simply look at what I've got (7 in all) and choose whatever appeals to me at the moment. Maybe I'll go for the burn of VIBR, the warmth of Captain's Choice, or something else. Usually when switching, I remember why the brand appeals to me, and I'll use it for a few days before switching again.

Eloge du Traitre. Good choice.

Maybe smelling the burning reminded you of it or made you crave it.

When I smell oud on people I immediately want to wear oud the following day. Not Pure Oud or Oud by Mona di Orio. Real oud oil.

Once I've heard my boss complain about someone wearing a 'dreadful smell'. It was oud. I don't dare take anything oud-like to work.

Interesting. I don't Eloge du Traitre is an offensive perfume at all so I suspect that your coworker was smelling something else, something that you can't smell perhaps because you can only smell EdT. It is also possible that there is something else they are smelling that has nothing to do with you but is being blamed on your mishap. Seriously, I don't thin Eloge has that kind of burning smell. Yes, there's an incense vibe to it and it's a touch on the skank side but all in all it doesn't approach anything offensive. Unless you sprayed it 5 or 6 times - anything is offensive at that intensity!
