Burgundy/Dark Red Inks: Insight Needed

Greetings from Mendel!

I currently have Noodlers Tiananmen, Diamine Syrah, Noodlers Black Swan in Australian Roses (PIF from uscgme3), and a sample of J. Herbin Rouge Hematite ( PIF from Rudy Vey, which I have yet to try).

Most of my pens have fine nibs. I find that Noodler's is too wet with too much feathering, show through, and bleed through for my liking. Diamine Syrah is much better.

Are there any dark red/burgundy inks out there with great properties that don't have the problems I seem to experience with Noodlers?

I have had great luck with Noodler's Black Swan in Australian Roses, so much so that it has become my "daily driver" ink. I always have two pens inked with it, both Esterbrooks. One, a J model, is currently sporting a 2668 nib and gives me a nice medium/fine line. Another, an SJ version, has a 1551 nib and is what I would call a fine/medium line. I rarely have problems with feathering but show through is pretty consistent with the 2668 and not much of a problem with the 1551.

I know you said no Noodler's but I could get rid of all my Noodler's inks but Black Swan in Australian Roses. I have had the least amount of trouble with that ink and it shades rather nicely... If I was brave enough to head to the post office tomorrow I would send you a sample... If you can wait until next week I could ;)

You should try out your J. Herbin Rouge Hematite. It may be what you are looking for. I used it for all of my Christmas cards, and like it a lot.

Hey Mendel, you will be receiving a Christmas card with Black Swan in Australian Roses. I used a medium italic, so you will get to see the shading. It is a great ink, IMO.

on edit: if you want a sample, let me know.

Believe it or not, but the post offices here aren't busy at all. Yesterday I had no wait, today I had about a two minute wait.

Diamine Oxblood or Red Dragon would likely suit you. I really like them both and they are modestly priced and well behaved.

+1 Diamine Oxblood is my most used ink. I also enjoy Red Dragon.

I have never, ever had any luck with Noodlers inks.

I recently tried MontBlanc Hitchcock. The bottle is beautiful and the ink performed well. That said, I didn't enjoy the ink enough to justify the increased cost over the Diamenes I mentioned above.

Good luck.

Hands down, reds are my favorite inks.

I tried to swab some of my reds for you. I'm not sure how well this will work as it is just a cell phone picture taken in poor lighting.

If you like the modern Mont Blanc bottles (I actually like their bottles more than their inks) then check out the Hitchcock and the Carlo Collodi. I love both of those bottles.
