Brylcreem Question

I use Brylcreem in my hair everyday and notice that I have breakouts of pimples along my hair line and the back of my neck. I have tried groom and clean but would prefer something that has hold and does not get crunchy like hairspray and has shine. Does anyone have any suggestions on what works really good? I shampoo everyday with Paul Mitchell Tea Tree shampoo and conditioner.

Is there anything that does not have any smell and provides hold and shine? What about Paul Mitchell Tea tree pomade? What do you recommend?

Best,
Jerry

Never used the Paul Mitchell, but water soluble pomades are what you're looking for. Something that says it provides a "sleek" finish, since most today provide a matte finish. Look in the American Crew line, among others.

I use Groom and Clean, once it drys, just comb it out and the crunchy is gone, hair looks and feels natural. Same with Pinaud Clubman.

Never had a crunchy problem with G&C, typically my go to if not using Pomade. Spread that stuff around a looot
I hate brylcreem though, it has like 0 hold for me and is stupidly greasy (more so then pomade for me...)

@kevan

what is a water soluble hair product? What brands?
Just means you can rinse it out with water. Classic pomades are not....modern pomades and "fibers" are. Groom and Clean is too. There are tons of brands out there that allow for what you are looking for, but many of them dry to a matte finish, not shiny. People swear by the Clubman gel but I've never used it. I've used American Crew and Aveda Men products (both offer pomades), but there are literally more than a dozen brands. Axe pomade actually isn't that bad either.

American Crew pomade is da bomb! Keeps my hair in that classic "Don Draper" professional look without looking like I'm a retro 'nut'

Now half as wise
Suavecito Pomade will wash out easily, though maybe not as much shine as you are wanting.

You might try Royal Crown pomade, available at most big box stores, ala Wallymart...Its about $3 bucks and works great for holding down hair and still allowing some shine. Top it off with a lighter-weight oil like Murrays, and you're good to go!

Never saw the pomade in stores, only the crappy hair dressing, and not even at walmart.
Also murray's isn't that light!

Thank you all for the suggestions! I ditched my brylcreem and hairspray combination and am using Clubman's styling gel (green). It works great! Does the clubman make you break out a little bit ?

If you like a light holding cream with little scent and slight gloss, I recommend Suavecito's Brilliancreme. Its similar to Wildroot but less greasy. It washes out easily and smells similar to clubman's talc. I use it exclusively and have had no issues breaking out. You can easily restyle your hair with just a comb (no water) or with your hands. It doesn't get crunch or hard like gels and some modern pomades do. Absolutely love the stuff.

I use Brylcreem, but it's the EU formulation that comes in a red tub. I tried the US formulation and it's not at all the same (comes in a black tube), kind of greasy, and has a different feel and what I consider an unpleasant smell. I don't even think they're manufactured by the same company, so perhaps a marketing 'gentleman's agreement'?

I don't think it's intended to be used in conjunction with hairspray???

+1 on the brilliant creme. Great stuff.
Another factor about your breakouts is to try and wipe down your forehead, or neckline(or wherever it is you are experiencing break outs), every so often. Especially in humid or hot situations, the grease starts breaking down and sweating down and thats the main factor of the breakouts. A good bandana/paper towel/whatever you like would do the trick.

Suavecito pomade mixed with a little of their brilliantcreme has fantastic hold with great shine. I really like the brilliantcreme on its own, but with the windy weather I like the hold better mixing the two.

Hey Jerry,
Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Pomade worked pretty well, but seemed to wear out after a few hours. It's supposed to be "all natural" so that might be better on the skin though.
I personally use Murray's Super Lite (Walmart $2.50) which is petroleum based and doesn't was out easily or Layrite Pomade which is water based and very easily washed out. Both leave you with a sleek and shiny look and hold all day.
I've recently started using Groom and Clean, but which comes in a tube that works pretty well for something similar to Bryllcream.
I've always just shopped around trying different stuff, but I always seem to come back to Murray's Super Lite and Layrite.

Good luck and be safe!
Take care,
Adam

I found Old Spice Spiffy Pomade was really similar to Brylcreem, except it has better hold. It's very easy to wash out of your hair, so removal of the product isn't an issue, leaving your hairline able to breathe easily between applications. The scent may put you off, but I find it to be fairly mild(some may disagree). I would argue that I can smell Brylcreem more than I can OS Spiffy, but YMMV on something so personal. I seriously recommend trying it though, it's available almost everywhere, and is fairly cheap.
