Brush ?

Hey guys I am new to the forum and the more searching the more confused I am getting about brushes. My wife wantes to get me a late Christmas gift and I would like a silvertip brush. I use a mug for lather what would you guys recommend. She is willing to pay for a quality product so lets see what you guys think.

There's an endless line of great brushes, took me a week and a half to sort through before I decided on a new one. For silvertip: Edwin Jagger, Shavemac, Muhle, Rooney are just a few to look into...

There are just way too many and without more of a guideline you are just going to get "my favorite brush is" type of answers.

A helpful hint would be your price (or a high/low and be realistic)? No point telling you about some of the killer $200+ brushes if you are after a $30 brush.

First step, forget about the "Silvertip" tag. It doesn't mean much. What one quality maker calls "Silvertip", another calls "Super" and another calls "Finest".

There are so many options with brushes, it's hard to help you. Someone recommended the Duke. It is a great starting point. It is one of the most popular, along with the Chubby.

I however would recommend the Thater 4125 or a Shavemac. You can't go wrong if you get a Simpsons, Thater, Shavemac, or Rooney IMO.

I asked essentially the same question of a B&B friend just about exactly a year ago. He recommended a Rooney Style 3 Size 1 in Super Silvertip. I used it almost exclusively (including during weekly travel) for several months until I picked up a Morris & Forndran 2-band Blonde on BST. I used those two brushes in alternating rotation until losing my head in October. A toss-up for me if I were starting over would be the Rooney Style 1 Size 2. You can't go wrong either way. Top quality that won't break the bank.

Get a Simpsons Duke 2 and just be done with it.

I hear a lot about this Duke brush... is it that good?

Depends on what you are using it as (face or bowl). It is a decent face lathering brush but the handle is a little too small for me to get it into a bowl without banging my fingers when trying to whip up a lather.

It's all personal preference. Some people like the Duke 2 as a bowl lathering brush. I have certainly used it this way on occasion but I have other (larger handle) brushes that I prefer to use when making a lather in a bowl.

Simpsons makes a pretty decent product. It's hard to go wrong getting any brush in their lineup.

+1 Too many brushes to list.

For that personal touch, your wife should connect with one of our custom brush makers here like bobfarvour, Rudy Vey, king1976, deruitem or Neep (they and more can be found in the Vendor and Hobbyist forums here). They'll work with her to select a handle material and shape, and a badger knot that suits you and your needs. Best of all, the price will be on par with or less expensive than the stock brushes from the major manufacturers.

Great question. Any brush including a drug store boar brush in a box will transform your morning routine. If your budget is below $30 I'd suggest an Omega or Semogue boar, if 50 to 100, try some of the artisan brush makers mentioned, if over $100 a Duke 3 from Simpson would be my highest recommendation. Let us know what you figure out.

After seeing the brush chronicles I had her go with an Edwin Jagger medium silver tip what do you guys think

I've been using that brush for the last couple of weeks and I like it. Really soft, luxurious hair. Real backbone too. Very nice in my short experience.

Used the same brush Large (23 mm knot) and my initial thought was that the Medium could be too small. Not at all. It could be my only brush... but I like to have (many) others and some of them bigger ones just because...

In short, good choice.. for your first silvertip!
