Brush with a screwdriver handle?

I can't find it, but I have seen on here where someone tried or may have succeeded in building a custom brush. Could anyone post a link or maybe offer suggestions on the feasibility of trying this? The idea intrigues me, a lot.

I don't recall having seen a brush made from a screwdriver handle, but I don't think it would be terribly difficult to do. I'd start with a large enough screwdriver so the handle would be appropriately sized, and then cut the length of handle I wanted. I'd not want to mess with attempting to remove the screwdriver blade from its handle; rather I'd use the portion below where the screwdriver blade (tang?) ends. I hope that makes sense. Anyway, then it's just a matter of drilling the handle to accept the size knot and loft height desired. This sounds like a pretty good project, Russ. If you decide to do it, please post about it (and, of course, include photos). Good luck!

You may be able to buy empty screwdriver handles. I have observed the guys on tool trucks (Snap-on, Mac, Matco, Cornwell, etc) replace broken handles. Nest time you drive by a parked tool truck, it may be worth stopping and asking.

Good idea, I will have to keep my eyes open. I am curious if the handle will be fat enough to drill out. I am not crazy, I saw one on here somewhere - it was a craftsman screw driver.

I think I recall someone doing it, but it was at least a couple of years ago. If you can get the right-sized handle, there's no reason you couldn't bore it out and insert a badger or boar knot.

That's a great idea-- sure would save a lot of potential trouble.

Yea, that was me who tried to make a brush from an amber screwdriver handle. Unfortunately the handle from that thread failed, it melted when I tried to bore and polish it too thin. It really would have worked perfect with an 18mm knot but I was young, inexperienced and dead set on cramming a 20mm in there. :blushing:
The profile of that screwdriver was quite comfortable to hold and it really wasn't too hard to get to that point. I'd be tempted to try it again if I came across another Xcelite screwdriver again. If you have any specific questions about it let me know.

Thanks, I might do that - the size of the handle is a concern. I am thinking of looking for a 'giant' example, the kind heavy equipment mechs might use. If I find one large enough I will be giving it a try.

Russ, for whatever it's worth, I recall seeing recently a set of pry bars somewhere (Sears, maybe?) that had very large screwdriver-type handles.

Pulled off! Hole fits a penny ever so snuggly, so it's just over 19mm in size. I debated trying for 20mm but I could feel the walls getting thin. Snap on stubby screwdriver handle!

Now, what do I put in it that's around 18mm in size? $xsso.jpg

Ordered a 20mm TGN pure knot last night. They specify it to be 19mm +/- .5mm. I'll see if I can squeeze that in and take some pictures!
