Brown Leaf Monthly Discussion for August: Special Smokes

For August's monthly discussion we're encouraging everyone to pull out a cigar, or pipe blend that you've been waiting to savor, smoke it, and share them with us.

Sometimes when we get our hands on something well aged, hard to find, or just something not in our normal rotation we put these away for some occasion or celebration that would justify breaking them out, however this month we're not waiting any longer. Everyday is special. Celebrate today!

This discussion isn't just for ultra premium, or vintage tobacco, anything you've been looking forward to we want to hear about. Since this thread has the potential to include products not everyone has seen or heard of, pictures and reviews are highly encouraged.

I have a Cohiba Esplendido sitting in my humidor that was given to me by a manager of mine that left for another job in the company. I am waiting to light it up when I get my Journeyman ticket in February. I am very excited to smoke that.

I also have a pack of Cohiba No. 3's sitting in my coolidor for close to a year now. They are going to be a wedding present for my friends that are getting married next week.

I have a bowl full of a discontinued local blend cellaring in a jar that I'm going to hold onto until some big event in my life far into the future.

And last I have a jar full a christmas blend that my B&M did up that I'm going to save for the next christmas I have with family.

EDIT: Great topic Derrick!

Yeah but you're supposed to pull out something special and smoke it THIS month.

Reminds me of the movie Sideways. Paul Giamatti's character was saving a bottle of wine for a special occasion. Ultimately, he figured out that life is short and that simply drinking that wine IS a special occasion.

Carpe Tabacum!

off the top of my head I have a montecristo gran reserva, Alec Bradley Fine and Rare, a few camacho liberty 2012, box for LP flying pigs, box of LP UF-13, A few LP dirty ratz, a couple LP LP40, a cohiba behike 56, a couple HdM double coronoas. I'll probably light up one of the LP's this month or maybe the HdM.

BTW I'll try and snag some pics when I get home tonight.

Man, you have a ridiculous amount of LPs in your stash - including some very hard to find stuff. Well done on amassing this collection. Are these all scores from your local B&M?

My collection isn't old or varied enough to have many specialties or special occasion smokes, but this (horrid) picture shows my three most prized possessions (all generously sent samples!)

The unlabeled bag on the left is a sample of Penzance sent by a spam loving member not too long ago, I'm going to smoke some next week just because in the spirit of this thread. The Lane Crown Achievement was sent by an intrepid giant squid fighter because I said 28 yr old 'baccy wasn't ancient as it's only 1 yr younger than me. That is a lovely smoke, I smoked it with my brother-in-law on the night he married my sister, good times. Very mellow and smooth with a hint of sweetness halfway through the bowl. My best friends birthday is tomorrow, another excuse to smoke this. The SG Firedance Flake is well-aged and was also sent by the squid fighter. It is a lovely flake. Rubs out like a champ. It is SG Best Brown flavored with blackberry brandy and a hint of vanilla. Yes, it is as good as it sounds. I'm sure I can invent an excuse to smoke this soon as well!

I've got some sticks left from when I started smoking cigars 10+ years ago. They're nothing super special but I'll be breaking some out this month, including one of my 2 Victor Sinclair Big Sur monstrosities.

10 years of age?!? Wow. That's quite some time for aging cigars. I'd be willing to bet those cigars will be quite tasty, though probably fairly mellow.

I can't imagine having a cigar in my humidor for that long. Then again, I smoke once a week at most and have over 50 cigars in my humidor with more on the way - so I guess it's fairly likely some will stay in there quite awhile.

Fridays are Fishtastic!
I have some special tobacco, but I don't save it for special occasions. I smoke my Penzance when the mood strikes me, like last night.

I guess this is special. I just opened my first ever purchased tin of tobacco, FM cellar and I am having the inaugural smoke. Up to this point I have been smoking house of calabash blends and samples people have given me. Enjoy gents!!!

I pulled out this Victor Sinclare Big Sur over the weekend. It had between 10 & 12 years of age on it, and was purchased in the early days of my cigar smoking hobby. I had a whole review typed out, but closed the browser tab before I was finished and lost it. The Cliff Notes version is that it's a 6x70 behemoth. Took over 2 hours to smoke, and probably could have gone another 30 minutes. It wasn't comfortable to hold or smoke, and tasted OK.

I cracked a hoyo de monterrey double corona this weekend. Had nice earthy and leather flavor to it. As it moved towards the middle of the smoke, I noticed some floral and cocoa notes to it as well. Great draw and pretty sublime smoke. I enjoyed it a lot. I'll probably light up a liga privada something to in the coming weeks.

I have 8 ounces of FVF from '07 in a jar that's waiting for my LE to arrive. That, or I might finally open the tin of Solani Silver Flake that I purchased sometime in '11.
