Broke my go-to razor.forced to use a neglected backup!

Last night, I accidentally dropped my Merkur 23C on the tile floor, and it broke. I immediately went to Amazon and bought a replacement (Parker 99R), which should be here Wednesday. I ended up skipping the shave last night, but really needed to do it today, as I was getting a bit scruffy. That forced me to use my Gillette SS blue tip, which I bought three years ago, and decided it was too mild, and haven't touched since.

Going back to it now, after four years of DE experience, and I can say I got a DFS out of it. Took a little more time and care to get it right, but the results were there. I was originally planning to ditch it, but now I think I'll hang on to it. It won't be my every day shaver, but as a backup, or when traveling, it'll be good to have around.

Does anyone else have any similar experience, with a product you initially wrote off, and then came to appreciate further down the line?

Happens to me all the time. But most of the time the things I didn't like are great for a single use occasionally, it's when I have to use something I previously disliked continuously I see why I originally didn't like it.

I'm enjoying milder razors these days, and appreciating the nice shaves they can give. Vintage Gillettes like US and English Techs, Super Speeds and Aristocrats are getting a lot of face time these days.

Early on, I thought they were useless.

Hi,

I use a Blue Tip for third pass for BBS. Not everyday, as DFS from second pass Early Tech is plenty fine. But the mildness of the Blue Tip is worth keeping just for the once in a while when I want it.

I originally wrote off the fat handle tech. I recently used one and got a nice BBS shave out of it with an Astra SP blade.
