Bourbons you don't like

There's been plenty of threads on what you like, but what have you bought that was hard to finish the bottle? My biggest disappointments have been Eagle Rare 10 and George Dickel 12. The Eagle Rare I mixed and the Dickel is collecting dust.

My personal over-rated or bad bourbons list is as follows:

  • Maker's Mark was a disapointment as it lacked character
  • Ancient Age was awful
  • Evan Williams was uninspired and boring
  • Old Grand Dad was not drinkable
  • Wordford Reserve was too bland for me but quite smooth
That's off the top of my head.

Eagle Rare 10 was a big disappointment for me too. I bought it blind based on lots of positive comments here at B&B. I'll have to revisit it sometime, but I think it will be a mixer or I'll throw it out at a party. It wasn't bad per se, but there was something "off" about it. Oh, and the bottle is too high to fit in my cabinets. :frown:

George Dickel 12 is a favorite of mine, however. Good enough to drink neat and cheap enough to mix. Once my current bottle is gone, I'd like to try the Barrel Select. Funny how individual tastes are.

Woodford Reserve is just "meh" to me. I think I might need to give it another shot as I haven't had it in a while, but I can't justify the price for something I might end up making manhattans out of, even at its lower TJ's price tag.

I don't get excited about Maker's Mark either. I'm not a huge fan of it neat and don't understand why it seems to be the go-to for bartenders when they make manhattans. I do think that it serves a good purpose for many people as a gateway bourbon from Jack (Yes, I know it's not really bourbon) & Jim to the "Bs", Dickel, Eagle Rare etc....

Jim Beam Black. Not too much difference between it and its baby brother.

Buffalo Trace was quite disappointing to me. I also recall feeling as though my bottle of Blanton's was way overpriced for the quality.

Doesn't mean I wouldn't happily accept a bottle of either.

:tongue_smWhatever you guys don't like and still have at home, just send it to me!

On a serious note though Makers Mark is not my favorite either , but if thats whats left ill sip on it!

I will agree with most of that, but down here (Southern California) Evan Williams can be picked up for $13.99 for a 1.75L. I don't need much inspiration to enjoy one or two of those after work!:thumbup1:

At that price, I can learn to live with Evan Williams bourbon.

I don't have favorites which is why when available airline bottles are preferred because they enable the sampling of many; conclusion, haven't found any undrinkable(s) but some for me are better than others. "De gustibus non disputandum est."

Red Stag. I bought a bottle on a whim, and then wished I'd have spent the money on just about anything else. I hope flavored whiskey isn't something that ever catches on in a big way.

It's probably illegal to sell alcohol that cheaply her in Utah.

I don't know which ones are bad, as I only drink the good ones. Here's what's in my cabinet:

Blanton's
Booker's
Baker's
Basil Hayden's
Woodford
Wathens
Pappy van Winkle - when I'm lucky enough to find a 20 year, and ONLY on very special occassions

You can do what I did and switch from bourbon to rye. I like Wild Turkey Rye. A very fair tipple. I take mine with soda or ginger ale with twist.

Oh, don't worry. There's enough booze in my cabinet to sate my palette. There are also number of bourbons that are quite fine, such as Bulleit, Russel's Reserve or Buffalo Trace, to keep me on the bourbon train. As a Canadian, I also have access to a fair share of good ryes as well.

I thought the Pappy Van Winkle 20 year old was very disappointing for its price point (even though it constantly gets great reviews). The Van Winkle 12 year Lot B is a far superior bourbon IMHO for 1/2 the $$. A few others I wouldn't buy again are Old Grandad, Wild Turkey 80*, and the regular Forrester's. The Wild Turkey Rare Breed and Forrester's Birthday Editions are excellent.

I've only had two Bourbons. Maker's Mark was...just whiskey. Nothing more, nothing less. Can't remember a single thing about it.

Evan Williams was atrocious when drank neat or on the rocks. Just awful! If you're looking for a decent mixed drink, EW and Pepsi is pretty good! Especially considering just how BAD it was without the soda.

There are no bad bourbons. There are only those I drink neat and those that go in the wife's whiskey sour cabinet.:biggrin1:
