Blade Sharpness

It seems a given that different DE blades have varying levels of sharpness, in fact I'm sure everyone here could create a list of all the blades they have tried, from sharpest to least sharp. I'm just wondering, what actually makes a blade sharp, and is there any way to measure it objectively? The same goes for smoothness, any measurable quantity we can ascribe? And remember, units please.

Fuzz, this is largely subjective, but most folks are pretty much in agreement with the conventional understanding of what blades are sharper than others. Same pretty much goes for 'smoothness'. This is pretty much anecdotal, and there is little rigorous investigation, and fewer 'numbers'.

There are a couple of threads with photos of blade edges at very high magnifications, but really, no 'numbers' to go with them.

This is about clear as mud, sorry.

Definitions of sharpness? Wow.... generally has to do with the angle of the edge and the thickness of the edge. Glass and diamond knives are about the sharpest edges out there, and it has to do with the fact that you can get the edge at about the width of a molecule of a couple of atomic layers. You want to find the sharpness objectively, get yourself a good microscope and make some edge measurements. Smoothness might have something to do with the burrs or irregularities on the edge of the metal.
