I always wondered about this, Since most Big Boys and Big Fellows were made in Gold and Silver or Chrome, Why wouldn't a Big Boy Hybrid Be in Gold/Silver/Chromium ?

Here is a Big Boy Hybrid in what appears to be Chromium. EBay Link here. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Gil...D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

Nothing jumps out at me at first glance screaming "problem," and I don't see why they couldn't/wouldn't have made sets like these. If they were doing these sets to clear out a backlog of cases, then why wouldn't some chrome ones turn up, too? Looking at the photos, I can't tell if it's chrome or nickel, though. It looks a little "warm" for chrome, but that could just be the white balance of the photos.

Ben, Member B&B Mistercitizen has one too

That's a standard NEW DeLuxe chromium Big Boy, not a hybrid.

Actually pulling the images over for posterity. Sorry for the duplication, but the ones above will disappear when eBay wipes them.

Oh it appears that I am wrong. Isn't this auction that Vargas posted for a NEW Deluxe Big Boy? What makes it a Hybrid?

It is a NEW Deluxe Big Boy and they were plated in Gold and Chromium.

No, it's definitely a hybrid. Check the short-comb NEW head, and the shorter handle with the strangely (but correctly) positioned grooves in the fake "knob" at the bottom of the handle. The hybrid comes apart like a Pocket Edition three-piece razor.

Oh ok! Thank you. The Hybrids came before the Big Boy?

So are all Big Boys that aren't Hybrid classified as a "De Luxe?" What's the story behind the differences?

I don't think we're absolutely sure. To me, it would make more sense for them to come after the NEW DeLuxe versions, but we've seen some in the older wooden Big Fellow cases, like Achim's below, which I suppose could have just been in storage for a few years before they decided to use them. But still, it does make for a bit of extra confusion.

Well, yes, but only because those are the only two variants that they made. The "De Luxe" refers specifically to the head design with the thicker, flat-bottomed guard plate.

No, the standard NEW heads were never serial numbered, and the one in this auction had a short-comb NEW head with the full complement of patent numbers, meaning that it couldn't possibly be that early.

Edit: Come to think of it, so is Achim's which means that it couldn't possibly have been from the switchover between New Improved and NEW. So it would have had to have been an older stock of Big Fellow cases that Gillette decided to go back and use up.

It does make for good confusion. Do you think that Auto Strop owner Gaisman becoming Gillette's new president and taking over all aspects of the company may have led to this confusion, after all he did get rid Gillette's design team and brought in his own teams.

So what does your edit conclude?
