Bevel angle and how it affects the shave

There were some discussions lately about the "right" bevel angle of a razor. Some actually recommend that the bevel angle should be calculated in order to determine the use of tape in order to adapt it to your shaving preferences. On coticule.be you'll find a nice tool to calculate it. Can someone in the know tell us how the keeness and shaving capabilities of a razor would be in relation to a certain angle? Is it correct to say, that a more acute angle would result in more sharpness and less comfort or is that simplifying too much?

I think its one of those things where there is an acceptable range, after that its more of a user preference thing. Or what you get used to shaving with. I started straight shaving with an old Genco that was honed down to where it was closer to 20 degrees, and after that a frame back and some wedges. They were all pretty high in the acceptable range of say 15 to 25 degrees. Tried a 6/8 full hollow that was 16 or 17 degrees and honestly it was pretty uncomfortable/harsh compared to the others, and all sharpened with the same stone/method.
Im sure I could have adjusted/adapted my shaving technique but there is definitely a different feel when there is a difference in the final angle.

Its something else thats fun to play with and experiment on in my opinion.

I got myself a vernier recently and measured some of my razors. One of my favorites has a bevel that is around 14 degrees. Many of my others are between 17 and 19, some of which I like as much as the 14 degree one, but they have different sizes and grinds. I've decided its one more variable about which i'm not sure. I guess I could try to eliminate any doubt by testing on two identical gold dollars.

To me - if you go too low, and the steel can't hold it's a problem.
If the angle is to wide, and the blade feels heavy - that's a problem.

In the first scenario - I tape to bring the angle up.
In the second scenario - I thin the spine to make the angle more acute.

After that - I sorta feel that measuring angles is a waste of time.
