Best newbie slant

I've been wet-shaving for several months and have gotten the hang of it. I've bought several razors and I'm consistently getting BBS with very little irritation every day.

I'd like to try a slant. I know they are more aggressive (or, I think they are). Is there a good one to start with?

I get really good shaves from my Merkur short handle slant.
+1 ... when it comes to Slants, Merkur seems to have a lock on today's market.

While you can hold your breath and wait for one of the vintage brands like Hoffritz, Pomco, Fassan, and others to appear, its not really worth the wait.

If you're getting good technique with your current razor, you should adapt to the slant fairly quickly.

Pull the trigger and get either the short or long handle Merkur Slant, load it up with your favorite blade (mine is Feather) and go to it. Slowly, carefully at first. NO PRESSURE. A day or two to learn how to navigate it around your face, and after a week, it will seem like you've been shaving with it all along.

Where have all the short handle slants gone?

I am backordered on a Merkur 37c slant, and they seem to be out of stock everywhere. Is this typical?

I assume that one distributor serves everyone, and when one store gets them the others will also.

Raelly want to try one, but not in a big hurry. Hopefully it will ship soon.

They are great razors. I think "aggresive" is the wrong word for them. I find them to be exceedingly smooth and very forgiving. To be honest I think the term "efficient" is probably better. I have a couple of razors that I would call aggresive and am always worried about being nicked or cut if I shave with them so I have to be very very carefull with my technique. I don't have to be quite as careful with my slant. I think you would really enjoy either the long or the short handle slant by Merkur. Though the short handle one seems to be out of stock at most retailers so I think people are starting to catch on to how good this razor shaves and how gentle it is to your skin. I have the 39C but I am waiting for the 37C to be back in stock as I will be buying one of those as well. I'm quite certain you wouldn't regret buying one. If you did and put it up for sale on these forums it would be gone in very short order.

+1. well said.

I love my 37C slant razor. I shave both.face & dome and I get incredible face & dome shaves. The 37C is a great performer. I like to pair it up with the Astra/SP, Feather, Polsilver Super Iridium, & Gillette 7 o'clock Black.

Keep us posted with pics when you get one and join the Alliance of Merkur.

A bakelite German slant from around the 1920s, unknown brandname. (Remember the movie Cabaret? Its from that era.)

Dpm802, that bakelite slant looks pretty cool. I don't know if it's just the angle of the pic or what, but it looks like the handle on that razor is extremely short, maybe halfway between a travel Tech and a flairtip SS. Is that the case?

discontinued, sorry.

i have the 37g, and had a corrosion issue with the stem near the head plate (or whatever it's called). The 37g is no longer available, but I am waiting for the chrome (37 c) replacement head from Merkur which I will probably bst as I don't love the slant as much as my other razors.

Didn't think the 37c was discontinued as well.

Merkur 37C is an excellent slant. I just got one of the last ones in stock from Superior Shave. I absolutely love it. It is not aggressive in the sense of skin feel. It feels just as smooth and gentle as my EJ DE89, but cuts more efficiently. If I weren't so happy with my Merkur Progress, the 37C would be my daily driver. As good as the 37C is, though, Progress outshaves it. You can look around on auction sites, but the vintage Merkurs and re-branded Merkurs like Pomco, Hoffritz, etc. go for way too much money. They are very cool and most of them are silverplated, but shave the same as the modern 37C, which will set you back around $50 new. It is made on the same base as the 34C, only with a slanted head. Great design and a great shaver. You will like it. Do not be intimidated, just shave as you would with a normal razor. It will feel similar, but will shave way better. Mine came with a Merkur blade, which I find not super sharp, but I tried it in the 37C and was amazed at how well it performed. Have not tried it with some of my better blades yet as I have been on the Progress kick without wanting to really use any other razor. I will try the slant with Super Max SP, Astra SP and of course, Feather just to see what the super sharp blade and the slant do together.

I think its about the same overall length as a Merkur HD ... it may look shorter because of the angle I took th pic.

That razor is nice and hefty, despite its being mostly plastic. Probably because of the massive handle. It gives a great shave, although just like with my 39C, I wouldn't want to use it every single day.
