Best Mail order Ham

Well besides for the fact I'm a sucker for smoked meats.... normally i take care of the christmas ham etc. for my family by ordering a whole smoked ham (normally of the peppered variety) from somewhere such as burgers smokehouse.

Just curious what kind of options I had as far as small quality places to order smoked meat and as for hams what type is your favorite from a given place.

Can tell what high priced ham not to order, smithfield, bought one, was gifted one, soaked them as per instructions for 3 days, totally unedeble. Both went in the trash.

There is ham, and then there is ham. Sugar cured, salt cured, pre-cooked, prep needed, sliced, whole, etc etc.

My favorite is country ham, which is probably an acquired taste that a good portion of the country would find utterly disgusting. But I also like a nice sugary pre-cooked spiral ham such as HoneyBaked for the holidays.

I always thought that Smithfield hams were like italian ham/prosciouto-to be used in very small amts, thin slices almost like a condiment rather than eaten like a regular meat course. Is that right? I would heartily agree that a good country ham from Virginia is hard to beat. When I was a kid in New York City hams imported from Poland were popular but that might have been more a local/ethnic thing Krackas and Atalanta Brand???):tongue_sm. In college there was a kid from Virginia who would start each trimester with a ham from home-he would hang it in his closet, cut off anything that looked foul and eat the rest. He never seemed to suffer from it.

Jamon Iberico. Only $79/lb. For the next time you're looking to spend $1400 on a ham.

Mail order? Now I'm all for online shopping but I think this is carrying it a bit far. What's wrong with hitting up your local butcher or even just the local grocery store and buying one?

Burger's Smokehouse @ Smokehouse.com located in California, MO. Morant's Old Fashioned Sausage Kitchen in Sacramento, CA 916-731-4377 if they ship; I have never eaten better including Jamon Iberico.

You cant really buy a smoked brown sugar and pepper rubbed spiral sliced ham locally.... if i could i would. But it seems like if you want high quality smoked meats its mail order or nothing...and i am a big fan of country hams myself buy my father and mother both love the peppered and its more for them then for myself and brother/sister.

But thank you for the suggestions the $1400 one will have to wait until i hit the lottery but i beleive i am going to go with this ham.... based on a couple pms i got

I'm partial to smoked.. just keep in mind most country hams are very salty

Alton Brown just did a show on hams. According to him, country hams need to be soaked in water for 24 hours with several water changes to reduce the saltiness. I didn't know that and thought it was interesting.
