Best Gillette Blade?

Hello B&B!!

It seems as though Gillette & O'Clock's have close to the sharpness of Feathers, without nearly the harshness. I believe the Feathers may be a bit too harsh for my face, however I still need a very sharp blade due to the wiry, thick, coarse whiskers I grow. Gillette 7 O'Clocks seem to work for me however I have only tried the Green pack. What is the difference between them all? And which one is regarded as the best? Are they all that different?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I'm no expert but IMO they are all different. I've used the yellow pack (sharp edge) and the black pack (super platinum) and I got great shaves with them both. Gillette Silver Blue however was lacking IMO.

You wont get everyone to agree on which one is best. "best blade" is highly subjective.

The Great Blade Exchange has LOTS of Gillette blades in stock if you have a few blades that you can exchange stop over, browse the list and try out as many Gillettes as you want

You gotta try them all and decide for yourself. Blade choice is a "self serve" event. There's no group therapy for blade choice.

As Jason recommended. the blade exchange is where you can play around with a lot of different blades so you can make up you mind

I prefer Yellows, Blacks, and lastly GSB. I have my first Greens coming in the mail right now and have never used Blues.

I feel that Yellow has the best balance of sharpness and smoothness. Blacks are very sharp but remind me of Feathers when it comes to easier irritation. GSBs feel incredibly smooth (I don't think I've ever got irritation) but I usually have to make an extra pass.

In what has to be the most complete series of blade v blade tests - See Oscrofts Black v Blue blind test. He's tested other Gillette "colors" against each other and others.

Putting the scientific approach behind us - I find the 7'O blacks and the Silver Blues give me very good shaves. The Blacks being a bit closer and the SB a bit smoother. Both good alternatives to Feathers - although not quite as sharp.

The 7 o'clock are produced in Russia and India. Super Stainless (green) and Sharp Edge (yellow) in Russia, Permasharp (green) and Super Platinum (black) in India. I haven´t tried the India blades but the Russian blades are sharp and smooth. I like them.

7 O'Clock - Yellows, Blacks, Greens (from Russia), Greens (from India), Blues (from Russia), Blues (from Czech)

Gillette - Platinums (gray and blue box), Platinums (white and blue box), Silver Blues, Super Stainless, Rubies, Bleue Extras, Super Thins (Thai), Super Thins (Viet Nam), Blue (China), Minora, and the long gone favorites - Spoilers and Swedes

And those are just the ones that come to mind easily. I'm sure I'm missing some. Anyway, asking what's the best Gillette or 7 O'Clock blade will take you quite a while to work out if you go through a pack or two of each of them.

I have tried the Yellow's, 7 O'Clock Blues and Silver Blues. 7 O'Clock Blues are extremely sharp, but I still can't shave with them without tearing the hell out of my face, even with my R89, which is a very mild razor. The Yellow's were sharp but I tried them early on in my shaving career, so I didn't get the best results with them either.

The Silver Blues have been a Godsend for me. Great balance of sharpness and smoothness. The only exception has been in my 66' Flairtip. Every blade I've tried so far has torn up my neck with that razor. I'm thinking I may need something sharper. I'll try an O'Clock Blue again, along with the Israeli Blues and the USA Personna's.

My suggestion, buy a 5 pack of every Gillette blade you can get your hands on. That's the only way you're going to find the right one for you. You should be able to buy all of them for under $30 or so. Money well spent.

Well, for me it's the Super Stainless, aka "The Spoiler"

Love that blade. I've piled up over 1400 of them.

For modern blades: GSBs and Blacks.
