Best brush to give as a gift

I want to give my brother a DE set and was unsure what brush to get him. I don't want to break the bank. I'm going to give him one of my gillettes and probably a tube of proraso, and some Astras. But I'm unsure of what brush to get. Any suggestions?

No right answer here, but I'll suggest two. For excellent brushes on any budget, I'd recommend a Simpson Berkley or a Semogue 620.

Those are a little more than I wanted to spend, so I decided on a whipped dog silvertip. If he keeps up with it, I'll get him a nicer brush next year.

Starting with cheap stuff that works is always the right choice IMHO. There's a lot of time to add more and more pricey items.

Agree the WD punches way above its weight. My first "real" brush and it stays in the rotation with Simpsons and Farvour custom. If you want to be really nice, do the Oxy-Clean defunkification before you give it to him.

My vote is for the Wee Scot. You'll get two payoffs with that gift: 1) incredulity when he opens it, 2) unfettered appreciation when he uses it.

+1 on the OxyClean process. I tried to shave with a brand new Omega blonde boar and it smelled so bad, it literally made me vomit.

If the Berkeley 46 is out of your price range, WCS has a Simpson "Special" that I've been VERY impressed with.. I will be ordering a smaller Whipped Dog here in a few weeks. My current WD is a 30mm Silvertip knot, drilled to 20 mm and set VERY short. It's a monster face latherer but utterly useless in a mug.

It also looks like Larry over at Whipped Dog is running pretty low on knot inventory right now.

Just sent a Simpson's Colonel X2L and a tube of Proraso to the father in law for Christmas. The box with the handwriting on it, brush wrapped in tissue - I wish I were getting it.

Mühle silvertip fibre. Excellent quality, beautiful, versatile and 1/5 of the price of equal natural hair brushes (if such even exist). No de-skunking nor breaking in.

Is your brother experienced with a DE and Brush or will this be his first set?
