Berea Grit Hone

Does anybody have experience with Berea Grit Sandstone hones? I picked a vintage one up and in learning about it thought it was really neat to have a mid-west connection to a hone. There also are some stones from a different formation here in Michigan that were used as grindstones. While I was able to learn a lot of cool historical information, I was not able to get an idea of the stones actual grit rating. I am in the early learning stages of honing and would not know how to evaluate the stone by myself. Hoping somebody can provide some insight.

I've found a micro-scope is the best tool (besides shaving) to evaluate a stones effect on an edge.

What I've done in the past is to polish up an edge to where I "think" it's pretty good, examine it under a microscope, and then play around with the hone. If the edge is polished, the scratch marks show right away.
