I have a similar one and like it. If you charge the rice container prior to filling with hot rice it will stay warm for hours.

Do you ever have problems keeping cold foods on top cold, how much does the heat from the bottom container permeate the others?

Bento's are great. I ate lots of them when I was in Japan several years ago, and I am lucky to have several great Japanese restaurants where I live that serve them.
Here is a website that that is all about Bento with lots of recipe's for all kinds of things.

These kind of containers are for hot "or" cold foods. If you mix hot and cold in the same container everything just goes lukewarm.

I've had that same bento for about 6 months, and have had great results. I haven't used it for a cold meal, so I don't know how well things stay chilled. However, I would think it will do a good job of it. I usually prep lunch about an hour before heading out the door, and everything is still at a good temperature halfway or more through a 12 hour shift.

Got my girlfriend a Monbento bento box for the holidays and she can't imagine how she got through life without one. Her co-workers are getting on board as a result of seeing hers.

I have one that I've been using for years. If you want to keep things warm but don't need all the courses, just fill up the soup bowl with hot water. It'll keep everything else hot. I guess you could use it for a finger bowl when you eat lunch?
