Bench Strops

Hi Guys,
I got a couple of new bench strops to muck around with. (I got them from Star Shaving - good quality and fast shipping!)

As I PIF'd my Filly to a mate I am looking to paste the balsa one with some Kremer CrOx.

I have at home some Baby Oil, Camellia Oil and Pure Cosmetic Grade Alcohol. Which one of these would you use as a carrier for the CrOx? I'm pretty sure all could be used but is there any difference in the affect they will have on the balsa?

How did you apply it champ?
Mix it 50/50 then spray or drip it on and smear it round with your hand?

No carrier is needed for balsa (or leather for that matter)
The powder is so fine that it easily gets in to the material anyway.
Just look what it does to your hands, without any carrier :biggrin1:

Just sprinkle a light dust & rub it in thoroughly with a piece of scrap cloth.
Done!

+1 just dust it on. Maybe smear it with a paintbrush to get good coverage. A couple passes with a razor will embed it for life.(or at least a very long time.)

I have a couple of sticks of really old razor stropping paste & those instructions says that you should give a light smear to the leather & then spread it & work the paste in with the back (spine) of your razor.

That actually works very well too with powder (CrOx or Cerium) & is very similar to what you are suggesting.
I think that a carrier always alters the performance of the balsa or, especially, the leather. So my choice is no carrier.

Hey Muscles.

I use baby oil in my latest batch but any light mineral oil will do. Mix it about 50/50.

It will separate quickly and the CrO will sit on the bottom. It is really important that you give the container a really good shake before you use it to get it mixed evenly. Then all you need to do is dip your finger in (wearing a rubber glove, you grot! Actually it is a mutagen, so you'd want the glove anyway.) and spread a light coating on. As long as it has been mixed well you should be able to get the coating quite even without streaks, not that streaks should effect the performance. I wish I'd known you wanted one of these. I would have sorted you out. :wink2:

I applied mine with a drop of water, paste like, then spread it over the balsa, seemed to have done the trick.
