What's new

before and afters of my christmas present. it cleaned up real perdy!

my wife did a good job of surprising me this christmas (she usually does) i have been looking at the shaving mug pretty much every time we go to the antique stores. i really liked the way it looked and it already had my first initial engraved into it. i just never wanted to pay the price. my wife got it for me without me knowing about it. im so glad she got it because it is just so awesome. the stamp on the bottom says "wilcox silver plate co" quadruple plate meridan conn. the pat date says dec 29, 1895. after doing some research i found that this company along with others came together to form "the international silver company" in 1898. that makes me assume that its within those years but that could be completely wrong. there is also a 37 stamped and i have no idea what that means.

anyway enjoy the pics. i forgot to take a pic before i dipped it in the baking soda hot water bath but i did remember to take pictures aftet the first dip. the black that is on the bottom half of the cup is what the whole things looked like. i dipped it about 5 times and then took some maas to it. im happy with the results.

u can see that the bottom lip has been pushed in. the brush older also looks like something has pushed it down a little bit, not by much though. does anyone know what the 37 stamp is for?

that is really, really nice.

some of you guys have awesome antique stores with great stuff in them.

All I could find for you:

Wilcox Silver Plate Co.
Meriden, CT ~ c.1867 - 1961
Primarily a silverplate manufacturer, produced a line of sterling holloware in the mid-20th century. A division of International from 1898.

most likely the "37" is the year produced, as in 1937. I could be wrong though. Very nice piece!

thanks. this is where i got my info. http://www.silvercollecting.com/silvermarksW.html

the 37 makes sense though. the only reason i assumed earlier was cuz on the site i was looking at it showed the same stamp i have and when it grouped to form "The International Silver Company" it looks like the logo changed and had "Wilcox S.P. co" and "International S Co" in the same stamp in place of the old company stamp with only wilcox in it. the internet is also filled with a lot of things that are false so who the heck knows lol.

72plymsatellite,

I do not use shaving mugs, but that is one beautiful shaving mug! Enjoy and ensure your SWMBO gets a much deserved night out and a fine dinner:thumbup1:

I make no claims to knowing anything about silver stamps, and the like. Mine was just an educated guess.

I would doubt the 37 would be a date. By 1937, an 1895 patent would have expired and not likely noted on the product.

It could have been a lot number, model number, or craftsman number?

In any case, it is one beautiful piece of work . . . and dude, you've been told many times before how lucky you are regarding SWMBO!!
