Bay Rum VS Witch Hazel? Which one is better as an after shave?

Currently I don't use any after shave. I read on a forum that Witch hazel helps prevent razor burn. I end up with a reddish, painful neck about half of the time and this is why I'm considering using an after shave. I have oily skin so the alcohol content doesn't concern me. Does Bay Rum also prevent razor burn?

Bay Rum is a description of the main ingredient in some aftershaves, not an aftershave in and of itself. It's similar to calling a certain type "citrus" or "menthol".

Witch hazel won't sting as much as bay rum would because it has less alcohol. The tannins in witch hazel sort of constrict your pores. I personally didn't find witch hazel to be very "healing". Thayer's makes some that are scented.

If you want a splash, I have found Aqua Velva musk to be pretty gentle, and also the Masters AS seem to me to be more gentle than some others. If you want to actually try to "heal" it, then you may want to give afta a try since it does contain allantoin which is a good ingredient. You'll have to find what's good for you, good luck!

Oh I forgot to mention that Masters makes a bay rum. I have not used it however if it's like the rest of the Master's stuff it will go on smooth even though it's alcohol based. Good luck.

I do both.

After I finish shaving I'll rinse my face with water and then apply witch hazel.

Sometime later after my face is dry I apply aftershave which can be Master Bay Rum, Clubman, LV etc.

Seems to work for me.

+1 Get both, I rinse with hot water, apply generic witch hazel with a cotton round, clean up my shave mess, splash Clubman Bay Rum (or any other various a/s )
