Bay Rum Question

I bought a brush a few months back from another B&B member. When it arrived it smelled great. I asked him what soap he had been using: MW Bay Rum. I decided right then that I must like Bay Rum. (Years ago I didn't like the smell at all, but my only experience was with Royall and Dominca.) I am now buying different bay rums. The first one I got was a sample of Captain's Choice. Although it is billed as not having any clove in it, it smelled like it did to me, and lots of cinnamon. Pretty good, but I'm glad I only bought a sample. Next I found Honeybee Gardens. I already had their Sandalwood and liked it so I picked up their bay rum. This one I really like. Reminds me of the MW bay rum soap. So now I have pulled the trigger and ordered the Ogallala sampler and a puck of the plain bay rum soap. I hope that these will impress me enough to try others, including the Dominica and Royall. Maybe even Masters and Pinaud. I better just get samples of all of these because my cabinet is beginning to get overrun with AS's. The consequences of yet another AD.

So how would you compare the Ogallala, Royall, and Dominca using the MW bay rum soap scent or the HBG as a standard, or even against Captain's Choice?

Thanks for the input. Awaiting my shipment from Nebraska.

You might get a little more help in the Aftershave subforum.

I'm interested to what others will say though. I like some bay rums scents but most I've smelled are all clove.

Using Mystic Waters as the base, Ogallala is sweeter, and Royall and Dominica are spicier (spicy in terms of cloves). I think MW strikes the right balance between sweet and spice. However, I must say that my favorite bay rum is Clubman's. Very spicy!!! Captain's Choice and Mystic Waters round out my top 3.

While Ogallala smells great, I have heard from many that their soap does not perform very well. I've never tried it though, so I speak not from experience. But hey, if you like the scent and not the performance you can always use it for the shower!

Per your advice, I posted in in the AS Forum as well. It's really more of a general question about bay rum scent, in all products. Thanks for your suggestion. Tune in to the other post.

Barclay Crocker sells a Bay Rum sampler that has a bunch of aftershaves and colognes. FWIW, my favorites are Meehan Bonny Doon Farmsand St Johns, both of which are heavy on bay laurel and light on clove/cinnamon

I developed a recent fondness for Bay Rum. I like Pinaud Virgin Island Bay Rum. But, all straight Bay Rums are pretty fleeting.
So I picked up some Idole de Lubin, which, while not a Bay Rum EdT per se, nonetheless has some of that feel and and it lasts pretty well.

BillC mentioned the Barclay Crocker sampler -- just ran through it a few weeks ago. Great investment.

My favorites were both Dominica scents (especially the lime) and Captain's Choice.

St. John's and Meehan are among the best, but they're so expensive I can't see myself buying bottles.

Wasn't too fond of Ogalalla and Royall Bay Rhum.

Honeybee Gardens Bay Rum smells nothing like bay rum to me... It's got a good face feel, and it's super cheap, seems to have good ingredients. I don't like the scent. And I don't really think I'd know it was supposed to be a bay rum at all (Unlike Captain's Choice, Krampert's, Em's Place, Gilbert Henry, Dominica, Pinaud, Masters, Superior 70, Royall.... as different as they are).

I agree 100 %.
