My dad's brush is a Baton 769, and I really like the handle. The badger is shot. What size knot would it take? I'm thinking of trying to restore it myself. Thanks for the help.
A restore really isn't that tough a project, depending on how much actual restoration to the handle needs doing, or modification. And its pretty fun too!
I'd start by getting the old knot out. Either cut it off and drill it out, or maybe the steam it out method will work. I've always cut and drilled. A drill press makes it super easy, but it can be done with a hand drill, just step up the bit size as you go and be careful not to drill into the handle sides. A dremel and a sanding drum after this makes things really easy and cleans it up well, just be careful because those sanding drums can eat up the handle fast if you arent going slow.
After its out and you have the handle all cleaned up and pretty and ready for a knot, measure the opening in mm with either a fancy caliper or the old fashion way. Order up any knot you like accordingly. In my experience, its easier to carefully take away material to make a knot thats slightly too big fit than it is to deal with a knot thats too small. Keep that in mind when choosing your size.
Glue that knot in with some clear waterproof epoxy and you will be set my friend! Good luck, and share pics!
John-I'm really looking forward to it, and appreciate the guidance. My best guess, is it's a 18 to 20 mm knot. Now I gotta think about loft, and type of badger. This will be fun- will let you guys know when it's all done
