What's new

Bakkus 7/8 VG10 straight

I think Gold Dollar is now offering OEM blades for other brands.

First was the Titan, now we have this one. Both look exactly like a GD66. If I had the spare cash Id get one.

I did. When I get it I will share some info. It definitely looks like a 66. Heavy heel and grind. I know this one is a 7/8. When it gets here, maybe I will even do a pass around if anybody is interested.

No. But I think the GD factory simply uses a different steel in their machines for razors like this and the Titan

All I know is Japan does not ship its steel out. It is next to impossible to get it. So they have to be made in Japan (which is unlikely) or recycle some cutlery from Japan (even more unlikely) or they are lying about VG10. Just be careful.

Every VG10 knife out there is made in Japan????

VG-10 stands for V Gold 10 ("gold" meaning quality), or sometimes V-Kin-10(V金10号) (kin means "gold" in Japanese), and is a quality cutlery grade stainless steel produced in Japan. Takefu Special Steel co.,Ltd, based in Takefu, Fukui Prefecture, Japan (former cutlery/sword-making center of Echizen) originally designed VG-10 stainless steel.Takefu also made another version : VG10W which have 0.4 W in composition. VG-10's initial market was aimed at Japanese chefs, but also found a home in sport cutlery. However, Spyderco has also produced some of its most popular models from VG-10, resulting in a larger market for the steel.
Almost all VG-10 steel knife blades are manufactured in Japan.

I was one of the original testers of this Dutch forum and I like it a lot. It's not a perfect razor, the scales were a little loose and the shoulder is a bit big but it doesn't get in the way when honing like a Gold Dollar does.
The first thing I noticed when I received it is that it's very heavy, I didn't weight it but it is very noticeable. It's also very shiny.
A previous tester touched it up on a Naniwa 12K before shaving with it (don't know why) and I received it very sharp but my face doesn't like synthetic edges so I honed it on my shuobudani JNat. Honing this VG10 steel is something else, I did not have any problems with it and it took a great edge but getting there took me nearly twice as long as a normal carbon steel razor, it's just very hard and wear resistant steel so I expect it will keep it's edge for a very long time before it needs to get honed again. And it's stainless so with a little care it won't rust.
After giving it the JNat treatment it shaved like a dream, like I said it's very heavy and I like that but it has a good balance.
It's full hollow but it's quite beefy, I'd guess more like 3/4 hollow and feels like a serious tool in hand, just the way I like it and something I would bring with me if I was going to live on a dessert island.
With this weight behind it it cuts through whiskers like they weren't even there, I got some great shaves with it before it needed to go on to the next tester and I hated to let it go. I ordered my own the first day when the website was up, hope it arrives soon.

Seems these are made in Taiwan...

+1
I had the opportunity to test this razor aswell. Great entry level razor which the more advanced straight shavers like a lot aswell.
It's truly shave-ready on arrival, yet can benefit from some extra honing. Hard steel, yet easy to hone.

Most every knife made of VG-10 is from Japan! I have a few knives from VG-10 and I like them a lot. Easy to sharpen and hold the edge well.

Thank you for the write up. I'm following this thread with interest.

+1 I also tested it and its a great bang for a buck :)

Although I'm new to this forum, I also spend time on world and Dutch forums. Ik also tested this razor, and must say I was pretty surprised by it.

Here was my prototype,

I have a lot of VG-10 knives, belive me, this is no rubbish leftover steel, it's very heavy feeling, and has a very white shiny look to it. I like it, and should be getting a production model soon.
