What's new

Autumnal Equinox

It just got cool enough here in NY for me to breakout my DB 1.5. While I only face lather all summer there is something so soothing about whipping up a lusciously warm lather in a scuttle. Brushing fully developed warm lather onto my face for multiple passes is a real luxury, it's really a zen experience that leaves my face über-conditioned. For the season kick-off I went with super-lather of QCS Monaco & Lanolizado "Top Secret". If you live in a area with a cold winter I highly recommend putting a scuttle in your rotation.

As a Gentleman under restraint, buying a scuttle is not an option; trading a fatboy and some soap, however, is and said scuttle now sits (well, squats is more like it given the size) in my shave den. I've tried a few lathers in it and my success is marginal. Here's the thing: I have what I believe is the smaller DB scuttle and the lather accumulates up at the rim spilling out over the sides rather than politely growing from the bottom up. What is the technique here? As F&H knows, I've got some large brushes I'm testing. Should I go to a smaller one? Do I circle from the top down?

Face&Head,

This post could not have come at a better time. I broke out my DB 1.5 yesterday afternoon as well, as things around here are cooling down for Autumn. Proraso was my nostalgic product of choice. The warm lather was fantastic.

You guys are killing me! I am already buying way too much shaving stuff, and now you tempt me with a scuttle. Maybe a Christmas present?

Yes, a smaller brush would be preferable. If you are using a soap, don't use a very wet brush and start to build your lather in the bottom of the scuttle then add a few drops of water gradually as the lather volume increases. If you're trying to stick that two-badger Shavemac in a small scuttle you can expect that lather will coat the better part of your den by the time you're done. That brush is for lathering heads & a pretty-lady's legs.

I have a large scuttle and love it - all summer long as well. No problems keeping the lather in this big boy - and the price was right. Check out Robert Becker - great guy to deal with.

my DB will make it's appearance soon as well

like fac&head, over the past few weeks, months, i've been trying to use soaps and face lather the majority of the time. as the weather get colder (-2 the other night), i'll break out the creams and scuttle and give myself a warmer lather in mornings and put that scuttle to heavy use...we have long winters.

as for scents, i use them all year around, but have a feeling i'll be using my QCS Cayman soap come closer to Halloween, Thanksgiving, Pumpkin season, as the clove scent just suits that time of year.

Well, I have a pretty lady, but what I need is a willing pretty lady.

I'll give that a try with an 18-22mm knot. Thanks F&H.
