Attention Face Latherers: Which Brush That You've Tried Has The Best Flow Through?

Of all the qualities in a shaving brush, the one I tend to value most is flow through (how well a brush releases lather onto my face). I face lather exclusively so I take great pleasure in lather that releases easily and lays down thickly on my beard.

My three favourite brushes in this regard are;

1. Thater 2-band
2. Shavemac Silvertip 3-band
3. Savile Row Silvertip 3xxx series

What's your favourite? They can be brushes that you hate because they are too floppy or scritchy or soft. Just looking for flow through quality.

Of the six I currently rotate, my Semogue SOC 2 band has the best flow through. I have to take care not to use to much product or I end with a Santa Clause beard made of lather. :001_cool:

I got moves like Jagger
The little old Berkeley is quite a step down price-wise from those you listed, but worked the best all-round for me. Granted, I haven't tried any of those you have listed.... or anything in their class except for a 2-band Tulip.

+1

Me, too. Have a C&E BBB, Simpson Colonel, Grosvenor LE two-band and B&B Essential. Berkeley is best.

I too value flow through as the most important characteristic in a brush. There's one brush that is hands down the best over all others I've tried. Shavemac D01 2-band flat-top.

1. Thater 4292/6 2 band, fan
2. Savile Row 3824
3. Shavemac 167 2 band,d01,fan

I'm guessing we're just talkin badger here but if not I love both my Semogue SOC & 620 for both face and bowl lathering

Of the production brushes I have, all of which are Simpsons, my Berkley has the best flow through.

Of the brushes I have made, I would agree with some of the folks above, the TGN Finest knots (regular, not XH) also have great flow through. This one in Olivewood is my favorite. The bee liked it too :biggrin1:. Would have been perfect if it were a beehive handle.

Soaps: Simpson Rover
Creams: Thater 49125/0

I'm mostly a soap user and I admit to being underwhelmed by my Thater and soaps the first few uses. Loading as usual, the lather seemed very thin on my face. I wasn't sure if the problem was with the brush not releasing enough or just user error (more likely the cause). The past two weeks, however, I've been using the Thater with my T&H creams samples and have been getting the most outstanding and pleasurable shaves with that combo. I still haven't used it enough with soaps, but doubt any brush will ever overtake my Rover.

Just to play devils advocate, why do you all value flow threw so much? If your lather is well made, just a light cover will protect every bit as well as a thick Santa Claus beard. Is it that you like the way it looks/feels? Or possibly getting use over every last bit of the lather you built/paid for?

For myself, I like a denser knot that gives me a controlled thin application of lather for many passes. I find that by pass four many brushes "with great flow threw" have already spent all their lather on two big thick passes and a decent third pass, and finally sputter out by that fourth pass.

Just an honest question, not trying to flame.

As for my favorite flow threw brush using my own persnal deffinition, I'm going to have to go with a high density synthetic kabuki. There are several good ones, and they all make sublime lather quickly and effortlessly, and they distribute just the perfect constant amount of lather onto the face every pass first to last. Plus they lather very efficiently so your not wasting product....though with my massive stockpile I'm still not sure thats a good or bad thing!

Very nice looking brush you got there, nice picture too!

The Simpson Wee Scot has great flow through, just not the greatest retention.
