At home passport photos

Does anybody have any tips for taking and printing passport photos at home?

After hearing stories of photos being rejected for not meeting the size and color requirements I'm trying to do my homework so everything goes according to plan.

I see there are some software apps available that can help you size them correctly, does anyone have recommendations for something like this?

You know, CVS does this for 8 bucks (with an on-line coupon at their website http://www.cvsphoto.com/passport-photos ). They are already set up with the proper background, distance, lighting, etc. And you walk out with the photo in-hand. Not quite the quality you might get from a professional studio, but good enough and will meet all the requirements.

IMO, it's well worth $8.

Oh and btw...my sister in law is one of the rejection stories you hear about. She took a photo of herself at home, processed it on her computer and had it to where she thought it met all of the requirements. She set the appointment up and they ended up turning the photo down. She just went to CVS in the end.
