Ask me anything

Hi guys,

One thing, in my extremely short time here, I have noticed is that this community is built around the exchange of information/education.

Therefore, in an attempt to procrastinate from studying, I offer you all the knowledge I have.

About me:
I am now a 20 year old senior premed student at University of Michigan studying cellular and molecular biology, with a strong emphasis in physics and psychology. I prefer to study theoretical physics, such as quantum and string theory, as well as applying my knowledge in psychology to history and religion.

I enjoy computers/electronics, and color the development of hardware closely; particularly the limitations of the current generation and research being conducted in overcoming them, and very often this ends up correlating with my interest in physics, so yay!

I have basic knowledge of biochemistry and organic chemistry but I do use that knowledge extensively in my lab research. The lab research that I am currently doing is my own idea that a vascular surgeon is funding for me. The research is fairly cutting edge in the field of aortic abdominal aneurysms and I expect it to enter the clinical phases in roughly a decade.

I am the volunteer coordinator for a free health clinic in Detroit that sees couple hundred patients a month for free (that includes lab tests and medications). I am also on the executive board for an organization that collects medical supplies and sends them to impoverished communities free of charge. In the two years I have been with the organization, we have sent roughly $2 million worth of supplies that would have been trashed if it weren't for our efforts. I was also on the executive board for the Muslims' Student Association at U-M.

I absolutely adore surgeries, and to date I have seen roughly 80 hours worth of surgeries and I can't wait to see more this summer.

I am a Pakistan Muslim, my parents are quite literally from a farming village. The village got natural gas in 2006, I was shocked at how much they've advanced...I really mean...village. I born in and spent 9 years in Saudi Arabia where I lived under De jure racism. To this date I despise the Saudi government.

There is probably a lot more I'm missing, but this should be a solid start...

Regarding Questions:

I will answer to the best of my knowledge, and if I don't know something I will do my best to find out for you and report back. I will try to answer in questions based on what I think high school level science knowledge is. I know a lot about the state of research in numerous medical and biological fields, and am willing to explain the difficulties being encountered by the field. Being a student/employee (yay research!) of U-M, I will be referencing the numerous academic journals made available to me for information. I don't imagine a lot of people here subscribe to these journals, so it is something to consider...

I am willing to answer political and religious questions in the least bias manner I can. I don't mind if a question has racist/stereotypical basis, so long as I don't feel the intent is malicious.

I will provide citations when I feel they are required or they are requested by someone. I WILL NOT answer any medical questions and advise people on their life problems. I have absolutely no qualms in answering questions pertaining to the "about me" section and I don't mind if a question comes from completely left field. I also invite those knowledgeable about questions asked to help me answer them.

I will answer questions via PM as well. I don't really expect this thread to take off, but my services are yours to use.

Welcome to B&B.
What are you using for shaving at present?

sympathy question haha  you guys are awesome (no joke)

Using Parker 90R, and just finished my first meurker platinum. I'm going to give the 7'clocks (yellow) a try next.

I bowl lather using bodyshop maca root cream and a Omega 49...so far its been great. Today's shave was the first shave without the boar smell...and my god was it nice not having to smell it. Ordered a scuttle, can't wait for it to come.

"Sympathy question"?
No, just simple curiosity! Most folks here do not like Merkur blades at all. You will probably get better results from a different blade. You might check with the vendors here at B&B or perhaps on e-bay for a sample pack of different blades.
You now have another research project:
Find the blades that give you the best shaves!

I must admit, I was a little skeptical of the difference the blade could make back in my lurking days.

But I needed blades, so I tried this pack:

I also bought sharks locally, found them to be good, not great. I tried the 7'oclocks, and they hurt...alot. Tried the Wilkinson Sword Classics...amazing. The Merkurs were acceptable, better than the sharks.

I also noticed that my blade has a slight mechanical defect where loads unevenly (one side more aggressive than the other) without slight adjustments by me while tightening. So I want to chalk that up to the reason why the 7'oclocks sucked. I'll try again, making sure they are loaded properly and see if they are nicer. The Feathers...I want to be more experienced before tackling them. I still cut myself often.

I am thinking about buying the Merkur 38c (barber pole), but that won't be before I get my thesis done early next year.

After perfecting my setup, my focus will be on cutting down my costs/making things last longer...just cause.

what are your particular interests in quantum physics?

loved the subject of quantum computing and the overall theories but the math and physics where well above my head in the classes i took, my focus is in computer programming and i did not want to go to in-depth into the math of quantum. researched the theoretical fastest search of an unsorted database algorithm for my class (sat in on the other and did no research for it).

Three 180 pound adult males are travelling at 60 miles per hour Southbound in a car.

There is a freight train travelling 120 miles per hour heading East that will collide with the car if the speeds remain constant, and it is currently 30 miles west of the point of collision.

Which of the passengers in the car are wearing Lilac Vegetal?

There are no train crossings on the highway and no walgreens, so I assume the driver is on a regular street.

The man is clearly in a hurry, and there is someone that has put on Lilac Vegetal in the car....now despite the aftershaves somewhat repulsive scent, it is not so powerful to disturb the driver unless he has it on his own face. Now, you can assume that being extremely uncomfortable with the constant assault on his nostrils, he was unaware of his surroundings and didn't even notice the freight train.

All the man wanted was some Aqua Velva to offset the Lilac. Alas, i blame the other two men, friends don't let friends drive smelling Lilac Vegetal!

I can make a lilac vegetal positive version as well, I originally was going to, but then I changed my mind. I have, to be honest, never smelled the stuff.

chfair, I have two exams that I am horrendously prepared for, in roughly 23 hours. I'll answer you tomorrow night.

Is contrubiting to the sum of human knoladge more important the the suffering of individuals? Speficily in the context of the Stanford Prison Experiment which was stopped to prevent undue suffering of the voulenteers before it anwsered key questions about human nature and athourity.

42?
Any thoughts?

why doesn't the universe have an 'edge'? if the big bang created something from nothing (so to speak) and if the universe is still expanding, doesn't logic dictate there is an edge?
