ASB vs. moisturizer, or both?

Assuming that I have no problems with using multiple products that serve similar functions (I like to use alum and WH), what is the difference/benefit of ASB vs. a dedicated moisturizer? I don't think that I've seen it spelled out so explicitly, and would appreciate some opinions.

I use both as well. Not like I have any science behind it, but I feel like I'm using ASB for the benefits it has for my skin after a shave. But I apply an actual moisturizer afterwards as well because I've got pretty dry skin.

ASBs and moisturizers aren't different products, they're just variations on the theme of 'skin care product'. Each one has different ingredients so works a little bit differently and has it's own strengths and weaknesses, the biggest difference is often how they're marketed.

I have used them alone and in combination...recently, I am in teh combo mode and it works great. Thes are the things I sometimes try in combination:

T&H AS Balm
Trumper's skin food
Trumper's moisturizer
Na-PCA w/Aloe
NancyBoy facial moisturizer

I use alum and witch hazel just because I like too. I use the aulm first for the antiseptic benefits, and then the WH for the way it makes my skin feel. I then use a ASB to further cool my face, and if I felt I needed the moisturizer I'd then apply one. For either the ASB or the moisturizer I'd use something without a scent or a very faint scent. Then after any scent had died down I'd apply whatever AS I wanted. I look at it like if it works for you then who's to say its wrong?

The only difference that I've seen between them is that AS Balm seems to a bit runnier than most Moisturisers. Of course it's seen to be a whole lot more manlier to use ASB than it is a Moisturiser

Would Chuck Norris use a Moisturiser? Other than to cram it in places where the sun doesn't shine I would guess not!

Every formula is different - some are heavy and greasy, others are lighter. Some have toning ingredients, some none. Some offer spf protection, others don't. Scented/unscented/different scents.

Basically, you need to pick the products that addresses your specific skin situation and needs, regardless of how the product is branded and marketed.

Thanks for your response. But none of this is really about balms 'vs' moisterisers. It looks like really, noone knows, or balm is really just moisteriser marketed at men.

Nivea Sensitive ASB and Jojoba Oil do the trick for me.

Those are just marketing terms, there are no legal definitions (afaik) of either word.

Exactly. Take Cade balm (while you can, I would imagine). It's pretty much a moisturiser, and a thick, heavy one at that.

Musgo AS balm is the opposite, almost milky runny.

There aren't legal definitions. But there aren't legal definitions about the difference between a shaving soap and a shaving cream. We all recognise that they're different. I still think that there may be an answer to this question, and hopefully someone will chime in with the answer. For whats its worth I've read the leaflet that comes with the Nivea balms, which does describe the differences, at least between its different balms, but its all just marketing jibberish. But they do actually work somewhat differently.
